Summary of Job Duties:
**This is a remote coding position**
The Surgical Certified Procedural Coding Specialist is responsible for reviewing health record documentation to ensure it supports assigned diagnoses and procedures. This position applies knowledge of anatomy and physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, and diagnostic and procedural terminology to accurately assign codes. The specialist utilizes ICD-10 and CPT coding classification systems, UHDDS definitions, and Prospective Payment System guidelines to determine principal diagnoses and procedures and confirm DRGs and APCs. This role also applies knowledge of disease processes and surgical procedures to classify non-indexed medical terms and supports Patient Billing Services in submitting clean claims that meet medical necessity requirements.
Qualifications:
High School diploma/GED with one of the following certifications: CCA, CCS, CPC, RHIT, or RHIA, with two (2) years of coding experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in health information management or related field
  • Associate's degree in health information management or related field.
Responsibilities:
  • Reviews and selects appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes; CPT coding in this position is coding surgeries in the inpatient, observation, and day surgery suites utilizing a knowledge of anatomy and physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, and diagnostic procedural terminology while consulting reference materials and navigating electronic systems including but not limited to Epic.
  • Reviews and performs charge data entry to both hospital and physician patient accounting systems and consults with other coding staff, nursing units, case management staff, physicians, clinics, and hospital personnel.
  • Reviews documentation to match appropriate codes with documentation for medical necessity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
