Job description

Overview
CORT is hiring a full-time Safety Manager. This position will have the flexibility to work from a home office within the United States when not travelling. Travel may be extensive at times and could be up to 25%.
The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, leading, and continuously improving the company's safety programs and culture. This role ensures regulatory compliance, reduces incident frequency and severity, controls claim costs, and strengthens a proactive safety culture that protects employees, contractors, the public, and company assets. The Safety Manager serves as the organization's subject matter expert for fleet risk, occupational injury prevention, and workers' compensation program administration.
Yearly Salary: $95,000-$115,000 / year based on experience.
Eligibility: Applicants must reside within the continental U.S. in the Eastern or Central timezones. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. This position does not offer current or future visa sponsorship. CORT is not hiring remote workers in Montana, Wyoming or South Dakota.

Responsibilities
Safety
  • Make recommendations for improving the safety culture and for remedying any hazardous condition, practice, or potential loss-causing circumstance to comply with appropriate requirements and CORT's standards.
  • Consistently visit job sites to enhance communication of company's commitment to zero injury culture as well as conduct audits and training on best practices.
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities, or new prevention measures.
  • Develop company-wide initiatives to address, remedy or prevent workplace injury or risk.
  • Manages program to ensure thorough investigations of safety incidents, determines probable cause, makes recommendations for corrective action, and facilitates proper resolution. Expert advisor and trainer to field and HR leadership.
  • Manage and continuously improve the company's fleet safety strategy, including driver performance, preventable accident reduction, and DOT/FMCSA compliance.
  • Maintains and revises CORT's Corporate Safety Manual as necessary to ensure up to date and compliant policies.
  • Serve as supervisor and mentor for field leadership while helping with development of individual goals for success and improvement.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor and participates in all workplace safety forums and leadership meetings.
  • Member of CORT's safety team. Provides technical and administrative support to the safety committee.
  • Member of CORT's Best Demonstrated Practices group to advise and make recommendations in the area of safety.

Workers Compensation
  • Own and administer the company's workers' compensation program, including injury reporting, claims management, and return-to-work strategies.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with insurance carriers, third-party administrators (TPAs), brokers, and legal counsel.
  • Oversee injury investigations and root cause analyses to prevent recurrence and reduce claim severity.
  • Partner with HR and Operations to develop and manage early return-to-work, modified duty, and Monitor and manage workers' compensation costs, experience modifiers (EMR), reserves, and claim trends.
  • Ensure compliance with all state workers' compensation laws, posting requirements, and reporting obligations.

Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensures company adherance to FMCSA/DOT regulations and fleet safety protocols.
  • Ensures company adherance to California safety laws and regulations.
  • Ensure the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted.
  • Lead and/or review responses to OSHA investigations, citations, and negotiations and coordinate with designated internal and external representatives.

Reporting and Measurement
  • Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics.
  • Analyze and interpret data analytics to provide strategic enhancements tied to financial outcomes.
  • Develop systematic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting.
  • Prepare written correspondence, analyses, reports, and memos as needed.

Training and Education
  • Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention.
  • Inspect equipment, facilities, and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions.
  • Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes and handle worker's compensation claims.
  • Facilitate training classes/seminar, as needed.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required. Degree in Health and Safety, Safety Management or Engineering, Environmental Health, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive safety leadership experience, with significant fleet or driver safety oversight.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in a Safety leadership role.
  • Proven leadership experience in FMCSA/DOT regulated fleet environments, including direct ownership of driver safety programs, accident reduction strategies, and claim performance improvement.
  • Experience selecting, implementing, and monitoring telematics systems, including GPS, ELD, camera, and driver behavior platforms. Demonstrated experience translating telematics and incident data into actionable reporting, trend analysis, and targeted interventions to improve loss performance.
  • Extensive knowledge of current company safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • OSHA 30 preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar highly preferred.
  • Skilled in root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions required.
