Job description

SOLV Energy is a leading provider of infrastructure services to the power industry, designing, building and maintaining utility scale solar, battery storage and high voltage substation projects nationwide.

Job Description Summary:

The Substation Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and testing of electrical substation, ensuring they meet safety standards, operational requirements, and project specifications. The Substation Engineer should have a solid understanding of power systems, substation equipment, and relevant industry standards.
This role is fully remote. Specific location details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Review electrical substations, including layout, equipment selection, and equipment specifications in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.

  • Review load flow, short circuit, and relay coordination studies to ensure the reliability and efficiency of substation designs.

  • Prepare/Review detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications using AutoCAD electrical or Bluebeam.

  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including utility companies, contractors, and regulatory agencies to obtain approvals and permits for substation projects.

  • Review and evaluate vendor proposals for technical accuracy to specifications for substation components.

  • Identify opportunities for design upgrades, improvements, or provide value engineering solutions.

  • Provide technical support during the construction, testing, and commissioning of new substations, ensuring compliance with project schedules and quality standards.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to substation equipment and systems, both remotely and on-site.

  • Perform root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions for substation failures.

  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices in substation design, automation, and protection systems.

  • Assist in the development of standards, procedures, and guidelines for substation engineering activities.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including transmission planners, protection engineering, control systems specialists, PV engineering, and BESS engineering to ensure the seamless integration of substations into the overall power grid.

  • Participate in safety audits and inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards in substation facilities.

  • Assist with mentoring junior engineers, technicians, and peers providing guideance, training, and lessons learned on substation design principles and practices.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and records of substation designs and modifications.

  • Participate in team meetings/calls regularly

  • Demonstrate and maintain a safe work environment and direct safe work practices in energized substations.

  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Ability to travel as needed (~%10)

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field; master's degree preferred.

  • 2+ years in substation design, construction, or maintenance or equivalent design experience.

  • Solid understanding of power systems, including transmission, distribution, and generation.

  • Proficiency in engineering software tools such as ETAP, SKM, or PSS/E for power system analysis a plus.

  • Familiarity with protection relay programming, coordination studies, and simulation software (e.g., SEL, GE Enervista) a plus.

  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards and codes, such as IEEE, ANSI, and NESC.

  • Proficient technical skills in substation layout, equipment sizing, and protection coordination.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment (local and remote).

  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities and a commitment to quality.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Willingness to pursue licensure is a plus.
