Remote Technical Science information

What is a remote technical science?

A Remote Technical Science job involves applying scientific principles and technical skills to solve problems, conduct research, or develop products, all while working from a location outside of a traditional office or laboratory. These professionals often use digital tools to collaborate with teams, analyze data, write reports, and communicate findings. Common roles include data analysts, research scientists, or technical consultants specializing in fields such as biology, chemistry, engineering, or environmental science. Remote Technical Science positions allow for flexibility and can be found in academia, private industry, or government organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote technical scientist?

To thrive as a Remote Technical Scientist, you need a solid background in scientific research or engineering, analytical problem-solving, and typically a relevant bachelor's or advanced degree. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), data analysis software like Python or R, and remote collaboration tools is highly valuable. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and adaptability are key soft skills for remote teamwork and independent research. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring accurate scientific outcomes, effective virtual collaboration, and productivity outside traditional lab environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote technical science roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote technical science professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining effective communication with colleagues, accessing specialized equipment, and staying engaged with ongoing research. To address these, it's important to utilize collaborative tools like video conferencing and shared digital workspaces, proactively schedule regular meetings, and coordinate closely with on-site teams to ensure timely access to necessary resources. Additionally, setting clear goals and maintaining transparent documentation can help bridge the gap between remote and in-person work, fostering a productive and connected team environment.

USRM Distribution & Marketing Data Science is hiring a Senior Director I, Data Science to lead our Independent Agency Data Science team. This role will span two critical areas of work. First, it will oversee the expansion, improvement, and maintenance of our mature Quote Efficiency portfolio. Second, this role will direct emerging opportunities for IA Data Science, including models to make our Small Commercial products easier for agents to sell, models that help our Territory Managers use their time optimally, and models that influence the behavior of roughly 100,000 individual producers across our appointed independent agencies.

**Candidates who live within 50 miles of Boston, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Seattle, WA; Columbus, OH; or Plano, TX will follow a hybrid schedule, coming into the office two days per week. Otherwise, this role is remote with occasional travel.**

  • Leading and developing your team by setting clear goals and expectations, motivating and inspiring high performance, leveraging a diversity of perspectives, and supporting the people on your team as they grow and develop.

Preferred skills and experiences:

  • Deep knowledge of the data science lifecycle, from identifying and framing business opportunities, through training and deploying models, to evaluating and continually monitoring in-market performance.
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders who are not data scientists themselves, in complex business environments, to understand which problems need solving, design solutions, and bring them to market.
  •  Prior experience leading people.

Additional skills and experiences that are nice to have:

  • Hands-on data science and/or ML engineering technical skills.
  • Knowledge of the independent agency distribution channel.
Qualifications
  • Deep knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
  • Expert knowledge of predictive toolset, to include highly technical tools.
  • Proven ability to lead and drive projects and assignments to completion through others, to include prior experience effectively managing talent.
  • Exchanges ideas and conveys complex information clearly and concisely, verbally, visually (presentations and exhibits), and in writing, consistent with the audiences and stakeholders with which s/he interacts up to and including SBU/Corp Dept leadership.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the aligned functional area and client group.
  • Ability to give effective training and presentations to all levels of the organization.
  • Interacts with senior executives.

  • Utilizes significant business experience and judgment to direct work of unit and communicate results.
  • Has a value driven perspective with regard to understanding of work context and impact. Competencies typically acquired through an advanced degree (in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science or other relevant field of study) and 8 years of relevant experience or may be acquired through a Bachelor`s degree (scientific field of study) and 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Insurance or financial services industry experience preferred.
