What is a Remote Technical Science job?

A Remote Technical Science job involves applying scientific principles and technical skills to solve problems, conduct research, or develop products, all while working from a location outside of a traditional office or laboratory. These professionals often use digital tools to collaborate with teams, analyze data, write reports, and communicate findings. Common roles include data analysts, research scientists, or technical consultants specializing in fields such as biology, chemistry, engineering, or environmental science. Remote Technical Science positions allow for flexibility and can be found in academia, private industry, or government organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Technical Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Technical Scientist, you need a solid background in scientific research or engineering, analytical problem-solving, and typically a relevant bachelor's or advanced degree. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), data analysis software like Python or R, and remote collaboration tools is highly valuable. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and adaptability are key soft skills for remote teamwork and independent research. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring accurate scientific outcomes, effective virtual collaboration, and productivity outside traditional lab environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote technical science roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote technical science professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining effective communication with colleagues, accessing specialized equipment, and staying engaged with ongoing research. To address these, it's important to utilize collaborative tools like video conferencing and shared digital workspaces, proactively schedule regular meetings, and coordinate closely with on-site teams to ensure timely access to necessary resources. Additionally, setting clear goals and maintaining transparent documentation can help bridge the gap between remote and in-person work, fostering a productive and connected team environment.

DuPont Vespel parts and shapes deliver reliable performance in extreme environments where traditional plastics, composites, and metals fail. Engineered from high-performance polyimide resins, Vespel solutions meet demanding requirements for wear resistance, low friction, weight reduction, and durability across harsh conditions. Used in aerospace, defense, semiconductor, industrial, and transportation markets, Vespel components-from seal rings to engine parts-offer a lower total cost of ownership with superior longevity.

Job Description Summary

The Vespel business is seeking a customer-focused, highly motivated Technical Service & Development (TS&D) Engineer to drive growth across key Aerospace & Defense accounts. In this role, you will partner closely with commercial, marketing, and operations teams to lead technical engagement and support new product and application development.

This role is ideally based on-site in Valley View or Stow. Remote candidates will be considered, with occasional travel required for on-site collaboration at Vespel facilities in Valley View and Stow, Ohio.

  • Assigned customers and distributors within the Aerospace & Defense segment
  • Sales and Application Development teams for new and existing applications
  • Operations, quality, and complaint resolution processes
  • Serve as the technical focal point for assigned accounts, contributing to account strategy and execution
  • Analyze part performance, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions through to completion
  • Deliver training for customers and distributors and deliver presentations at industry conferences
  • Lead or support technical programs to achieve product qualification for commercialization
  • Coordinate product evaluations, data generation, and laboratory-based functional testing
  • Continuously build expertise in end-use applications to better support customers
  • Develop and contribute to product literature, sales tools, and case studies
  • Author and publish technical papers for conferences and trade shows
  • Provide input to the Aerospace & Defense business and marketing strategies
  • Drive innovative approaches to customer solutions, processes, and ways of working
  • Capture and communicate value-in-use insights and competitive intelligence to strengthen market position
  • Support global and regional programs within the Centers of Excellence (COE) framework, as applicable
  • Contribute to R&D programs by providing voice of the customer (VOC) and technical expertise to support new product and application development
  • Play a key role in new part commercialization by translating customer requirements (e.g., dimensions, tolerances, critical characteristics, material specifications) into accurate drawings, quotes, and timely delivery of new parts

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
  • 8+ years of aerospace engineering experience, with strong industry expertise and established professional networks (Aerospace & Defense experience preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally and drive programs across product, operations, R&D, quality, supply chain, sales, and marketing
  • Proven track record of initiative, ownership, and execution on complex projects and timelines
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams
  • Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships
  • Excellent communicator, with experience conveying technical concepts to broad audiences
  • Deep knowledge of the Aerospace & Defense sector, with experience in polymer composite fabrication processes
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to define clear activities, milestones, and timelines
  • Ability to translate application requirements into material specifications and testing methodologies
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
