Step Up Tutoring is mobilizing a national network of tutors to provide
free, one-on-one online tutoring and mentorship to 2nd-6th grade students from underserved communities.
We pair trained tutors with AI-powered learning software and research-backed curriculum, ensuring
each student gets both a caring human mentor and highly effective academic support that is tailored to their personal needs, at a fraction of traditional cost.
Position Specific Summary
The Role
Step Up Tutoring is seeking Work Study students to provide 1-on-1 tutoring to 2nd-6th grade students to help build fundamental math and literacy skills and to provide support and encouragement. All tutoring will take place virtually! No prior tutoring experience is needed.
Work-study tutors must work with a minimum of 3 students, which is 7 hours of work a week. You may tutor more students based on your award amount and on your schedule/total hours of availability.
Responsibilities:
- Work virtually with students in 2nd-6th grade, two sessions each week
- Tutor/Mentor a minimum of 3 students
- Focus on building fundamental math and literacy skills using evidence-based online programs
- Live training sessions to prepare you for tutoring - no prior experience required
Time Commitment:
- Each tutoring session is 45 minutes, plus 15 minutes of prep time = 1 hour per session
- 2 sessions per week x 3 students = 6 hours per week
- Pick up a substitute shift or complete extra training to bring your total to 7 hours per week
Requirements:
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Must reside in the United States
- Mandatory background check
- Commit for a minimum of 3 months
- Access to the internet and a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone

Standard Position Description
The student will provide tutoring services for early childhood literacy and middle school math. Tasks may include: build literacy and math skills with early childhood in small groups or one-on-one, or virtually. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.

Required Qualifications
This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided (Students working in an instructional capacity should be very familiar with the subject area in which they are working).
