What is the difference between Remote Startup General Counsel vs Remote Startup Legal Advisor?

CredentialsJD, bar admission, legal experience in startupsJD, legal experience, often specialized
Work EnvironmentIn-house, full-time, strategic roleConsultant or part-time, advisory role
Employer & Industry UsageStartup companies, in-house legal teamsLegal firms, consulting agencies, startups
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding in-house legal leadershipSeeking legal advice or consulting services

The Remote Startup General Counsel typically serves as the in-house legal leader, handling all legal matters for a startup. In contrast, a Remote Startup Legal Advisor provides specialized legal advice on a consulting basis. While both roles require legal credentials and industry experience, the General Counsel is a full-time, strategic position, whereas the Legal Advisor offers flexible, project-based support.

What are some unique challenges faced by a remote startup general counsel compared to in-house counsel at established companies?

As a Remote Startup General Counsel, you'll often navigate rapidly shifting priorities, ambiguous legal frameworks, and a high volume of varied legal requests from a lean team. Working remotely adds complexity to cross-functional collaboration, requiring strong communication skills and proactive engagement with product, engineering, and leadership teams. Unlike established companies with robust legal departments, you'll likely operate as a solo advisor, balancing risk management with the startup’s need for agility and growth. This role offers significant influence over company policy but demands adaptability and creative problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote startup general counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Startup General Counsel, you need a law degree, active bar membership, and deep expertise in startup law, contracts, intellectual property, and compliance. Familiarity with tools like contract management software, document collaboration platforms, and e-signature systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, independent judgment, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for navigating remote work and dynamic startup environments. These skills ensure legal compliance, efficient risk management, and effective support for business growth in a fast-paced, distributed company.

What does a remote startup general counsel do?

A Remote Startup General Counsel is a legal professional who oversees all legal matters for a startup company while working remotely. They act as the primary legal advisor to the founders and executive team, helping the startup navigate complex legal challenges as it grows. By operating remotely, they leverage digital communication and collaboration tools to provide timely legal support, often across different jurisdictions.

Job description

ABOUT US
Rythm is the fastest-growing lab in America. We redefined at-home testing with the world's easiest blood test and created a culture around monthly lab testing from home. We've processed millions of tests across all 50 states, and we do everything in-house, from sample testing and logistics to code, marketing, and design. That vertical integration gives us the speed, control, and creativity to shape the future of health and wellness.
THE ROLE
As General Counsel, you'll serve as a key strategic advisor to Rythm's founders and leadership team, helping the company navigate growth while balancing opportunity, risk, and innovation.
This is a highly impactful opportunity for someone who thrives in founder-led environments and enjoys operating at the intersection of business strategy, marketing, product, operations, and legal. You'll work closely with leadership to help scale the company responsibly while enabling bold decision-making and continued growth.
This is not a traditional legal gatekeeper role. We're looking for a commercially-minded operator who views legal as a business function, understands how to support high-growth consumer brands, and can help the company move quickly while managing risk effectively.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Serve as the company's primary legal advisor across all areas of the business.
  • Partner closely with founders and executive leadership on strategic initiatives and business decisions.
  • Lead CLIA, CAP, FDA, HIPAA, advertising, privacy, marketing, and regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Provide guidance on claims substantiation, consumer protection requirements, and risk management.
  • Oversee litigation strategy, dispute resolution, and outside counsel relationships.
  • Manage intellectual property, trademarks, licensing, and brand protection initiatives.
  • Review and negotiate commercial agreements, vendor contracts, partnership agreements, and corporate transactions.
  • Advise product, marketing, operations, and growth teams on legal considerations and business opportunities.
  • Develop scalable legal processes, policies, and frameworks to support company growth.
  • Balance speed, innovation, and risk in a fast-moving startup environment.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • 10+ years of legal experience, including significant experience supporting consumer-facing businesses.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership.
  • Experience advising high-growth consumer, healthcare, wellness, subscription, ecommerce, or regulated businesses.
  • Deep understanding of CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, FDA, marketing, and consumer protection regulations.
  • Strong experience managing claims substantiation and regulatory review processes.
  • Experience overseeing litigation, class action matters, and outside counsel.
  • Strong commercial contracting and negotiation experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a strategic business partner to founders and executive teams.
  • Excellent judgment and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
  • Comfortable operating autonomously in fast-paced, evolving environments.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to simplify complex legal issues for non-legal audiences.
  • Experience serving as General Counsel or Associate General Counsel at a high-growth consumer brand.
  • Experience supporting healthcare, diagnostics, wellness, supplements, or health technology companies.
  • Experience navigating M&A transactions and corporate development initiatives.
  • Experience supporting venture-backed startups through periods of rapid growth.
  • Prior experience at a top law firm.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
Rythm Health offers a competitive benefits package which includes:
  • Highly competitive base salary.
  • Meaningful equity aligned with the scope and impact of your role.
  • Flexible, remote-first work environment.
  • Generous Paid Time Off and company holidays.
  • 401(k).
  • Monthly Rythm membership with full access to at-home blood testing and personalized health insights.
  • Healthcare with monthly premium fully covered by the business.
  • High ownership and visibility from day one, with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
  • The chance to help shape the future of personalized health and preventative care.
  • A small, collaborative, mission-driven team that moves quickly and values great ideas regardless of title.
