Professionals in these roles ensure that companies comply with federal regulations by accurately filing forms such as 10-Ks, 10-Qs, and 8-Ks. They often work closely with finance, legal, and compliance teams to verify information and meet strict deadlines. These positions require strong attention to detail, knowledge of SEC regulations, and proficiency with electronic filing systems like EDGAR.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote SEC filing roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote SEC filing professionals often face challenges such as managing strict filing deadlines across time zones, ensuring secure handling of sensitive financial data, and maintaining clear communication with cross-functional teams. To address these, it's important to establish organized workflows, use secure file-sharing and collaboration tools, and schedule regular check-ins with legal and finance departments. Staying updated on regulatory changes and leveraging project management software can also help ensure accuracy and compliance in a remote environment.

Job description

A publicly traded company in Nashville's Green Hills area is seeking a Director of SEC Reporting. This is a crucial one-person function requiring an expert to set the standard, build the discipline, and own all SEC reporting from start to filing.

Why this role?

  • Ownership: You will own the full SEC reporting function—not support it or review it, but own it.

  • Impact: Apply technical depth to sharpen rigor, consistency, and disclosure quality.

  • Accountability: Step out of a large team structure and into direct, individual accountability.

  • Access: VP-level access and full ownership of the function from day one.

Key Responsibilities (What you'll own):

  • All SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and proxy): preparation, review, and timely filing.

  • Disclosure controls and SOX external reporting controls, including technical accounting memos.

  • Equity accounting and disclosure: ensuring accuracy, transparency, and executive-ready output.

  • Tax function oversight: managing transfer pricing and global expansion support.

  • Lease accounting and related technical matters via FinQuery.

  • Earnings materials and external communications: partnering with Investor Relations, Legal, and executive leadership.

  • Proxy statement development and annual reporting.

  • Direct development of a senior SEC accountant/analyst.

Ideal Candidate (Who fits):

  • CPA required. (Candidates without will not be considered.)

  • 10+ years of experience, preferably with a Big 4 Senior Manager background or equivalent industry SEC experience.

  • Deep, hands-on SEC filing experience (10-K, 10-Q, proxy).

  • Strong command of disclosure controls, SOX, and technical accounting.

  • Experience with equity accounting and reporting.

The Opportunity:

If you've spent your career as one of many hands on a filing, this is your chance to be the person. The reporting obligations are real, and the expectation is that you bring the standard—not learn it from someone else.

Location: Remote (U.S.) – Atlanta, GA • Dallas, TX • Tampa, FL
