What are some typical challenges faced by Remote Rock Mechanics Engineers, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Remote Rock Mechanics Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting subsurface data without direct access to the site, ensuring clear communication with on-site teams, and adapting to different time zones or project requirements. To prepare, candidates should strengthen their remote collaboration skills, become proficient with geological modeling software, and develop effective strategies for remote data analysis and reporting. Demonstrating flexibility and proactive problem-solving abilities is highly valued in this role.

What does a Remote Rock Mechanics Engineer do?

A Remote Rock Mechanics Engineer analyzes the behavior and properties of rock masses from a remote location, often using digital tools and data analysis software. They evaluate the stability and safety of rock structures in mining, civil, and petroleum engineering projects. Their work involves interpreting geotechnical data, modeling subsurface conditions, and providing recommendations for excavation, tunneling, or drilling operations. Remote work allows them to collaborate with onsite teams, review data, and create reports without being physically present at the project location.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Rock Mechanics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Rock Mechanics Engineer, you need a solid background in geological engineering, rock mechanics principles, and typically a degree in geotechnical or mining engineering. Familiarity with specialized modeling software (such as Rocscience, FLAC3D, or Phase2), data analysis tools, and relevant certifications are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and conveying technical findings remotely. These skills ensure accurate analysis, safe design solutions, and efficient project delivery in mining, tunneling, or civil engineering projects.

Job description

Join a team that's redefining mechanical innovation in the oil and gas sector. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll lead the design, optimization, and validation of advanced mobile mechanical systems that power drilling, completions, well intervention, and field operations. This role blends hands-on engineering with creative problem-solving-perfect for an engineer who thrives on turning complex challenges into reliable, high-performance solutions.

This role is remote within the Houston metropolitan area, with up to 55% travel to customer and client sites.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Develop: Engineer mobile mechanical systems for oil and gas applications-hydraulic equipment, mobile lifting systems, and field-service machinery.
  • Optimize Performance: Enhance reliability and efficiency for high-pressure, high-load, and high-cycle environments.
  • Model and Draw: Create detailed CAD models and drawings using Inventor (preferred), AutoCAD, or SolidWorks.
  • Prototype and Validate: Test and refine equipment to meet API, ASME, and internal quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and Improve: Diagnose field issues, reduce downtime, and drive continuous improvement in system performance.
  • Collaborate and Lead: Work cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, and field teams to deliver robust, field-ready solutions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's preferred).
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical design for oil & gas or heavy industrial equipment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Inventor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic systems, power units, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Proven ability to manage projects from concept through deployment.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Why Join Us
  • Work remotely while staying connected to Houston's dynamic energy sector.
  • Collaborate with a forward-thinking engineering team driving innovation in field-deployed machinery.
  • Competitive compensation, travel flexibility, and opportunities to lead high-impact projects.
