What is remote electrical consulting?

Remote electrical consulting is a service where electrical engineers or consultants provide expert advice, design solutions, troubleshooting, and project management support through online platforms rather than in-person visits. This can include reviewing plans, offering recommendations, conducting virtual site inspections, and helping resolve technical challenges from a distance. It is commonly used for commercial, industrial, and residential projects, making expert electrical guidance more accessible and cost-effective. Remote consulting leverages digital communication tools, ensuring timely support regardless of location.

How does a remote electrical consultant typically collaborate with on-site teams and clients?

As a remote electrical consultant, effective collaboration with on-site teams and clients is essential. Most communication happens through video calls, emails, and collaborative project management platforms, where consultants review plans, provide technical guidance, and resolve issues in real time. Consultants often participate in virtual site walkthroughs and offer support during installation or troubleshooting by interpreting drawings or providing step-by-step instructions. Building strong relationships and maintaining clear, proactive communication help ensure that remote work does not hinder project progress or quality.

What is the difference between Remote Electrical Consulting vs Remote Electrical Engineering?

Remote Electrical Consulting focuses on providing expert advice, project management, and design review for clients, often involving direct interaction with project sites. Remote Electrical Engineering involves technical design, analysis, and development of electrical systems, typically within engineering firms or R&D environments. While both roles require similar credentials, their work environments and primary functions differ, catering to distinct client needs and industry applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Electrical Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Electrical Consultant, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, relevant work experience, and typically a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with electrical design software (such as AutoCAD, Revit, or ETAP), building codes, and potentially a Professional Engineer (PE) license are common technical requirements. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills are crucial for collaborating with clients and teams virtually. These competencies ensure accurate, compliant electrical solutions and effective remote project delivery.

(ECI) is a leading power engineering consultant firm that provides engineering, system planning and studies, technical consultation, project management, surveying, environmental planning, commissioning/testing and construction services to electric utilities, energy developers and industrials throughout the U.S. Our experience includes system voltages from 4.16 kV through 765 kV.

ECI has an immediate opening for an experienced System Reliability and Compliance Engineer (NERC). This is a unique opportunity for a candidate to apply their existing knowledge of power systems and BES facilities to support ECI's internal stakeholders as well as the NERC compliance needs of external clients. The primary focus would be developing NERC FAC and PRC studies utilizing design and testing data from system protection, system studies, substation, and SCADA. Responsibilities also include supporting audits, managing, and tracking various NERC aspects of projects. The successful candidate will be working under the guidance of the ECI Manager of System Reliability and Compliance to support any transmission, substation, and generation projects. This includes answering technical questions and writing bid proposals/estimates.

ECI is looking for a candidate who is interested in working in any of the office locations listed. Remote, or remote/hybrid work options will be considered for applicants that have extensive experience in the subject matter.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering (degrees in engineering technology, engineering physics, or mathematics would be considered); 6+ years direct experience in electrical power, fossil, hydro, renewable generation, or transmission and substations; experience in NERC compliance associated with System Protection and Substation Engineering; excellent verbal/written communication skills; strong organization and planning skills; ability to work in a team environment; commitment to quality and accuracy; and a willingness to meet fast-paced project schedules. The successful applicant may be subject to client-mandated drug and background checking. Occasional travel/driving is required; therefore, the successful applicant will be subject to ECI's auto insurance carrier requirements. Applicants must not require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B visa status) now or in the future.

Salary commensurate with experience and education.  Benefits include:

  • Medical, dental and vision insurance
  • Flexible spending account
  • Health savings account
  • Life insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • 401(k), profit sharing and employee stock ownership plan
  • Paid vacation, personal days and holidays
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Continued professional education reimbursement
