What is a remote RN telephone triage nurse?

A Remote RN Telephone Triage job involves assessing patients’ symptoms and providing medical guidance over the phone or via telehealth services. Nurses use clinical protocols to determine the urgency of care needed and may advise self-care, schedule appointments, or refer patients to emergency services. This role requires strong critical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to work independently while following established guidelines. It is commonly used in healthcare organizations, insurance companies, and telehealth services to provide 24/7 medical support.

What does a remote RN telephone triage nurse do?

As a Remote RN Telephone Triage nurse, your primary responsibilities include answering patient calls, assessing symptoms remotely, providing medical advice, and directing patients to the appropriate level of care based on standardized triage protocols. You will also document each patient interaction in electronic health records, coordinate with providers or care teams as needed, and occasionally follow up with patients for ongoing situations. This role often involves working independently but requires frequent collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals. Flexibility in scheduling, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are essential for managing diverse patient inquiries and ensuring high-quality, timely care.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a remote RN telephone triage nurse?

To thrive as a Remote RN Telephone Triage nurse, you need an active RN license, strong clinical judgment, and experience in patient assessment and triage protocols. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and standardized triage guidelines such as Schmitt-Thompson protocols is frequently required. Outstanding communication, critical thinking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills.
