What is a remote rigging engineer?

Remote Rigging Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and manage rigging systems for digital assets, such as characters or objects, in animation, video games, or visual effects, while working remotely. They create the digital skeletons and control systems that allow animators to move and pose 3D models realistically. These engineers use specialized software to ensure the models deform correctly and efficiently, collaborating with animation teams through online tools. Their work is essential for bringing lifelike movement to virtual characters and objects in various media.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote rigging engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Rigging Engineer, you need strong mechanical engineering knowledge, experience with rigging systems, and a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, remote monitoring tools, and safety compliance systems is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are vital for collaborating with on-site teams and ensuring safe operations. These competencies are crucial for designing, analyzing, and overseeing rigging projects from a distance, maintaining safety, and ensuring operational efficiency.

How does a remote rigging engineer typically collaborate with animation and modeling teams during a project?

As a Remote Rigging Engineer, you'll frequently work alongside animators and modelers to ensure character rigs meet both artistic and technical requirements. Collaboration usually involves regular video meetings, sharing feedback through project management tools, and iterating on rigs based on team input. Clear communication skills and familiarity with collaborative platforms are crucial, as you'll need to adapt rigs based on evolving project needs while maintaining efficient workflows. This role often requires proactive problem-solving to bridge the gap between creative vision and technical functionality.

What is the difference between Remote Rigging Engineer vs Remote 3D Modeler?

AspectRemote Rigging EngineerRemote 3D Modeler
Required Credentials3D animation, rigging certifications, relevant software skills3D modeling, texturing, software proficiency
Work EnvironmentAnimation studios, gaming, film production, remote teamsAnimation studios, gaming, film, remote teams
Industry UsageUsed in character setup, animation pipelinesUsed in creating 3D assets, environments
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for technical 3D roles involving riggingCompared for asset creation roles

While both roles involve 3D work, Remote Rigging Engineers focus on creating skeletons and controls for characters to enable animation, whereas Remote 3D Modelers create detailed models and environments. Both roles require strong software skills and often work in similar industries, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Senior Mechanical CAD Designer, Rigging & Automation

Location: Las Vegas, NV (remote available for qualified candidates) Type: Full time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, no routine overtime Pay: $39 to $45 per hour ($81,000 to $94,000 annually), with room above that for candidates who bring theatrical rigging or entertainment automation experience

About Us

We're a Las Vegas manufacturing and construction firm specializing in theatrical rigging and automation systems. We design and build custom equipment and structural systems for live entertainment venues across the country.

We're looking for an experienced Mechanical CAD Designer to produce fabrication drawings, equipment layouts, and bills of materials for that work. This is not an entry level drafting job. We want someone who understands how things actually get built and can turn engineering concepts, architectural drawings, and 3D models into documentation a shop can work from.

Who We're Looking For

Our first choice is someone who has already drafted this kind of equipment. If you've worked in theatrical rigging, stage machinery, or entertainment automation, you know the hardware and the terminology, and you'll be productive here almost immediately. That experience is worth real money to us and it's reflected in what we'll pay.

We'll also seriously consider people from the closest adjacent fields:

  • Material handling, hoisting, or industrial automation
  • Structural steel and miscellaneous metals
  • Custom machinery and mechanical equipment
  • Job shop or custom fabrication

If that's your background, bring strong mechanical aptitude and genuine interest in learning our side of the business. The equipment is specialized and there's a real learning curve.

What You'll Do

  • Create 2D shop drawings, fabrication drawings, layouts, and bills of materials in AutoCAD
  • Interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical contract documents, then translate them into manufacturing and installation drawings
  • Develop light mechanical and structural assemblies: brackets, mounting systems, weldments, bolted frames, equipment layouts
  • Work with 3D models and assemblies in Onshape, including vendor, customer, and third party geometry
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, shop personnel, and installers so drawings are accurate and practical to build
  • Review and incorporate engineering markups, field dimensions, and as built conditions
  • Follow our CAD standards, drawing conventions, file management practices, and revision procedures
  • Help sort out drawing, fabrication, or installation issues when they come up in the shop or in the field

What You'll Need

  • 5+ years of professional drafting and design experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience with mechanical equipment, steel fabrication, structural systems, or custom manufacturing
  • Excellent 2D AutoCAD skills. This is non negotiable. AutoCAD is still the backbone of our daily workflow, and you need to be fast and accurate producing detailed fabrication and construction drawings in it
  • Solid grasp of dimensioning, tolerances, weld symbols, fasteners, steel shapes, fabrication practices, and BOM structure
  • Professional experience with 3D parametric modeling and STEP files, including turning imported geometry into clean 2D fabrication drawings. Onshape is preferred; SolidWorks or similar counts
  • Ability to read architectural and structural construction documents
  • Practical mechanical sense for how parts get fabricated, assembled, installed, and serviced
  • Ability to work independently while staying in sync with engineers, project managers, fabricators, and field crews

Nice to have: familiarity with Revit, enough to navigate a model and coordinate geometry when a project calls for it.

Most of our engineering still runs on 2D AutoCAD, but we're steadily expanding our use of Onshape. We want someone comfortable in both who can help us connect the two as our processes shift.

Location and Remote Work

The job is based in Las Vegas, but we'll consider remote candidates anywhere in the U.S. How much time you'll need on site depends on your background.

If you've worked in theatrical rigging or entertainment automation before, you may be able to move into a primarily remote role fairly quickly. If you're coming from an adjacent industry, plan on spending meaningful time in our Las Vegas facility during onboarding to learn our products, standards, and manufacturing processes. Either way, expect periodic travel to Las Vegas for project kickoffs, training, and coordination.

Benefits

Where you land in the pay range depends on your CAD proficiency, fabrication experience, ability to work on your own, and how close your background is to our industry.

  • 12 paid vacation days to start, increasing to 15 with tenure, plus 7 federal holidays
  • Medical, vision, life, pet, accident, and dental insurance
  • 401(k) with a 4% safe harbor match, vested immediately
  • Free financial planning, including 24/7 access to a Certified Financial Planner
  • 100% tuition reimbursement
  • A high end CAD workstation provided if you're working remotely

How to Apply

Send your resume along with drafting samples or a portfolio, as a PDF or a link. Applications without work samples won't be reviewed.

We especially want to see:

  • 2D AutoCAD fabrication or shop drawings
  • Mechanical or structural assemblies
  • Equipment layouts
  • Drawings produced from imported 3D or STEP geometry
  • Custom fabricated equipment or machinery

A CAD skills test is part of the hiring process.
