What is a remote pro bono counsel?

Remote Pro Bono Counsel are licensed attorneys who provide free legal services to individuals, nonprofits, or organizations in need, working from a remote location rather than in-person. They typically volunteer their time and expertise to assist with legal matters such as advice, document review, or representation in specific cases. This role allows lawyers to make a positive impact while maintaining flexibility in their work environment. Remote pro bono opportunities are often coordinated through legal aid organizations or law firm pro bono programs.

How does a remote pro bono counsel typically collaborate with legal teams and nonprofit clients?

Remote Pro Bono Counsel usually work closely with in-house legal teams, law firm partners, and nonprofit organizations by leveraging digital communication tools such as video conferencing, secure email, and document-sharing platforms. Effective collaboration often involves regular check-ins to coordinate case strategy, provide updates, and address legal questions. While working remotely, it’s important to proactively communicate availability and progress to ensure alignment with project timelines and client needs. This role also requires adaptability, as priorities can shift quickly based on the evolving needs of clients and partner organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote pro bono counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Pro Bono Counsel, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar membership, and a solid understanding of relevant legal areas such as public interest law or nonprofit legal support. Familiarity with legal research databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis), secure document management systems, and virtual communication tools is essential. Strong written and verbal communication, empathy, and the ability to work independently while collaborating remotely make a significant difference in this role. These skills ensure effective client advocacy, ethical legal service delivery, and meaningful contributions to underserved communities.

About JerseySTEM
All JerseySTEM roles are pro-bono (unpaid) positions.
JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey.
Members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of the organization's gender-equity agenda.
Membership is a minimum six-month commitment of approximately six flexible hours per week and includes a $100 refundable deposit, returned after six months of active membership. K-12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt from the deposit.
Overview
This is a pro-bono volunteer position.
JerseySTEM is seeking a member to standardize and operate our Gemini AI productivity stack using Google Gemini to collaborate and communicate across our fully remote, member-driven organization.
As the Gemini Core Enablement Lead, you will serve as both the architect and the primary builder of our foundational AI ecosystem. You will be responsible for defining our AI strategy (The 'Lead') while simultaneously building custom Gems, optimizing GWS integration, and providing hands-on support to our teams (The 'Do').
Responsibilities
  • Define and drive the AI roadmap, integrating Google Gemini across functional teams (Marketing, Curriculum, HR, etc.).
  • Establish standardized processes, including "Golden Prompts" and templates, to ensure consistent and high-quality outputs.
  • Develop governance frameworks in partnership with the CISO, ensuring security, data privacy, and ethical AI usage.
  • Design, build, and maintain a library of custom "Gems" tailored to organizational needs (e.g., grant writing, social media, branding).
  • Integrate Gemini deeply within Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) to automate reporting and content creation workflows.
  • Optimize and troubleshoot prompt performance, ensuring reliable and repeatable outputs.
  • Support advanced automation initiatives (e.g., Python or Google Apps Script integrations).
  • Deliver workshops and coaching sessions to increase AI fluency across the organization.
  • Develop onboarding materials, including a "Gemini Quick-Start Guide" for new members.
  • Promote AI adoption by communicating its value, sharing success stories, and tracking impact metrics.
  • Drive adoption goals (e.g., achieving 50%+ AI usage across core teams by end of 2026).

Qualifications
  • Proven experience with Google Workspace administration or advanced power-user expertise.
  • Strong prompt engineering skills, with the ability to generate high-quality, consistent outputs from LLMs.
  • Experience building AI-driven workflows (e.g., custom prompts, Gems, automated pipelines), with a portfolio or examples preferred.
  • Knowledge of automation tools such as Python or Google Apps Script (nice to have).
  • Experience in training, teaching, or change management is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain and advocate for AI adoption.
  • 5-6 hours per week, 6-12 month commitment
