Department: People

Office: Boston, New York, or Washington, D.C.

Summary

We strive to be enterprising, respectful, inclusive, insightful, and tenacious in every aspect of our business, including our interactions with clients, colleagues, and the communities where we have a presence. We rely on these core values to serve clients in key practice areas and industries – the pillars of Brown Rudnick: crisis management, which includes restructuring, investigations, and special situations; global litigation; life sciences; technology; and brand and reputation management.

We are looking for an experienced and passionate leader to join our fast-moving team. The Pro Bono Counsel will work collaboratively with Partners, leaders, and other stakeholders to design, develop, and execute the firm’s pro bono strategy across all office locations. You’ll play a key role in cultivating relationships with legal service providers and nonprofits, and in supporting attorneys in delivering high-impact, meaningful pro bono work in both the US and the UK.

The ideal candidate will be an innovative and pragmatic individual with top class communication skills, who is equally comfortable strategizing and executing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and lead the firm’s overall pro bono strategy in conjunction with the Pro Bono Chair, setting goals and priorities in alignment with the firm’s values and practice strengths.
  • Work closely with the Pro Bono Chair to identify and vet pro bono matters.
  • Assign pro bono matters to attorneys, ensuring a diverse and impactful docket across practice areas and offices.
  • Encourage and support attorney participation in pro bono work by facilitating opportunities, driving mentorship, and celebrating contributions.
  • Build and maintain relationships with legal service organizations, bar associations, public interest groups, and clients to foster pro bono opportunities and collaborations.
  • Coordinate and provide training and resources for attorneys on substantive legal topics relevant to pro bono work; oversee select matters and provide guidance as needed.
  • Track and report pro bono activity, hours, and outcomes for internal stakeholders and external audiences, including industry rankings (e.g., American Lawyer).
  • Represent the firm in pro bono community events, panels, and conferences; stay informed of emerging trends and issues in pro bono and public interest law.
  • Identify, plan, and lead the coordination of non-legal volunteer and community service activities across the firm.
  • Act as Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation, leading the Foundation’s mission to support education, community engagement, and equity-focused initiatives in underserved communities.

Experience and Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Substantial experience in public interest or pro bono work, including managing or coordinating legal services in a nonprofit or law firm environment.
  • An engaging leader, with a problem solving and collaborative mindset and a focus on continual improvement.
  • A top-class communicator (both orally and in writing) with excellent relationship building skills at all levels.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to meet multiple and fast paced deadlines.
  • Demonstrated expertise in creating and maintaining project plans, status reports, budgets, and communications.
  • Ability to operate at both a strategic and an operational level.

Who We Are

Brown Rudnick is a leading international law firm that provides exceptional, client-driven service in global litigation, crisis management (restructuring, investigations and special situations), brand and reputation management, life sciences and technology. We advise on high-profile cross-border matters while providing the kind of personal attention to clients that is typically found at boutiques. Our enterprising and tenacious lawyers serve our clients around the globe from offices in key financial centers in the U.S. and the U.K., and have been recognized by, among others, Chambers & Partners, Legal 500, Benchmark Litigation and Law360 for excellence in their fields.

Salary range based on experience level and location is estimated to be in the range of $160,000-$200,000.
