Remote Pre Sales Engineer information

What does a remote pre sales engineer do?

A Remote Pre Sales Engineer is a technical professional who supports the sales team by providing expertise on products and solutions to prospective customers, usually working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include understanding customer requirements, demonstrating product features, preparing technical documentation, and addressing technical questions during the sales process. They often collaborate with sales representatives to tailor solutions that fit client needs and help close deals. This role requires strong communication skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to work effectively without being onsite.

How does a remote pre sales engineer typically collaborate with sales and technical teams to deliver effective solutions to clients?

As a Remote Pre Sales Engineer, you will regularly interface with both the sales team and technical specialists to ensure client needs are fully understood and addressed. Your role often involves participating in virtual meetings, product demonstrations, and technical deep-dives to translate complex requirements into practical solutions. Effective communication and documentation are key, as you’ll relay client feedback to product teams and help sales representatives tailor proposals. Collaboration tools and clear processes help maintain alignment despite working remotely, making teamwork and adaptability essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote pre sales engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Pre Sales Engineer, you need a solid background in technical solution design, strong communication abilities, and often a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with CRM platforms, remote collaboration tools, and relevant certifications (such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or similar) are highly beneficial. Exceptional interpersonal skills, problem-solving, and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly make you stand out in this role. These skills ensure you can effectively bridge customer needs with technical solutions, driving sales success and client satisfaction in a virtual environment.

Job description

Title: Sales Engineer

Location: Remote – United States

Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $90,000–$130,000 base salary

Position Overview

Phoenix Staff is seeking a Sales Engineer to support the pre-sales process for a growing software organization. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with strong customer-facing communication, helping enterprise prospects understand how a complex software platform can address their operational, data, integration, and reporting needs.

The Sales Engineer will take ownership of technical discovery, demo preparation and configuration, customized prospect demonstrations, and solution scoping. Success in this role requires a strong technical foundation in SQL, APIs, data integrations, and software configuration, along with the ability to communicate comfortably and effectively with both technical and business stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is technically curious, approachable, and able to quickly understand complex software environments. Industry-specific experience is helpful but not required; greater emphasis is placed on technical depth, the ability to run effective custom demonstrations, and strong interpersonal communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with Sales to support qualified opportunities by assessing prospect objectives, workflows, systems, data needs, integration requirements, and technical considerations.
  • Lead technical discovery conversations to identify customer requirements, dependencies, risks, and potential solution approaches.
  • Prepare, configure, and deliver customized software demonstrations for enterprise prospects, tailoring each presentation to the customer’s workflows, use cases, and business priorities.
  • Use SQL, APIs, integrations, data configurations, and other technical capabilities to build relevant and effective demonstration scenarios.
  • Translate complex product functionality and technical concepts into clear business value for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Serve as a technical thought partner during the sales process, helping scope solutions and determine how the platform can address prospective customer requirements.
  • Document solution requirements, assumptions, dependencies, implementation considerations, estimated effort, and inputs needed to support accurate scoping and pricing.
  • Clearly communicate product capabilities, configuration needs, technical limitations, and potential implementation risks.
  • Own the readiness and reliability of demonstration environments, including configurations, workflows, integrations, and supporting data.
  • Build and maintain reusable demo configurations, technical documentation, sample datasets, and other pre-sales resources that improve consistency and efficiency.
  • Test demonstration environments and troubleshoot technical issues before customer-facing meetings.
  • Define clear technical requirements, priorities, and acceptance criteria when development or product support is needed for demonstrations or prospective customer solutions.
  • Collaborate with Product, Implementation, Development, Support, and Sales teams to resolve technical questions, incorporate prospect feedback, and facilitate effective post-sale transitions.
  • Provide technical guidance related to integrations, APIs, data structures, migrations, configurations, and implementation considerations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of product functionality, relevant customer use cases, competitive solutions, and applicable industry trends.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in solutions engineering, technical pre-sales, software implementation, technical consulting, or a comparable customer-facing technology role.
  • Strong baseline technical proficiency with SQL, APIs, data integrations, relational databases, software configuration, and cloud-based applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn complex software and independently prepare, configure, and deliver customer-facing product demonstrations.
  • Ability to write and work with SQL queries and understand relational data structures.
  • Experience gathering technical requirements and translating customer needs into practical solution approaches.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to hold effective conversations with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts in an approachable manner and connect product capabilities to customer needs and business outcomes.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple opportunities, demonstrations, priorities, and deadlines concurrently.
  • Detail-oriented approach to documentation, preparation, follow-through, and technical accuracy.
  • Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, relevant technical certification, or equivalent professional experience in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a related discipline.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience supporting SaaS or other software-based solutions in a pre-sales or customer-facing environment.
  • Experience working with APIs, complex integrations, data migrations, file-based data exchanges, or enterprise software implementations.
  • Background managing and configuring software demo or test environments, reusable configurations, workflows, and sample datasets.
  • Experience supporting regulated industries, government organizations, infrastructure-related environments, compliance-focused organizations, or similar markets.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific software, enterprise applications, reporting platforms, or operational technology solutions.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and JavaScript.
  • Experience with CRM and work management platforms such as Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho CRM, or comparable tools.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with distributed or offshore development teams.
  • Friendly, approachable communication style with the ability to build credibility and rapport during customer conversations.
  • Ability to travel occasionally and adjust availability when necessary to support customer meetings, demonstrations, and business needs.
