Remote Power Distribution Engineer information

What does a remote power distribution engineer do?

A Remote Power Distribution Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and maintaining electrical power distribution systems, often from a remote location. They use specialized software and tools to monitor power grids, troubleshoot issues, and optimize the distribution of electricity to ensure reliability and efficiency. Their work may involve collaborating with field teams, planning system upgrades, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Remote work allows them to manage projects and resolve problems without needing to be physically present at power distribution sites.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote power distribution engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Power Distribution Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and a relevant engineering degree with licensure such as a Professional Engineer (PE) certification. Familiarity with software like AutoCAD, SCADA systems, and power flow analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate remotely are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies enable engineers to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable power distribution while coordinating with dispersed teams and stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by remote power distribution engineers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote Power Distribution Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with on-site teams across different locations, troubleshooting issues without being physically present, and ensuring reliable communication with stakeholders. Effective management of these challenges involves leveraging advanced remote monitoring tools, maintaining clear communication protocols, and staying updated on the latest industry standards. Building strong relationships with field personnel and participating in regular virtual meetings can also help bridge the gap and ensure smooth project execution.

Job description

A DAY IN THE LIFE

As a Lead Electrical Engineer - Gas Power Generation, you'll lead the electrical engineering execution of utility-scale gas power generation projects from proposal development through construction and commissioning. You'll provide technical leadership across electrical engineering activities while establishing engineering standards, mentoring engineers, and ensuring designs are safe, reliable, constructible, and compliant with industry codes and client requirements.

Your day may involve collaborating with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), Project Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, Construction, and equipment manufacturers to develop electrical system designs, review engineering packages, coordinate utility interconnections, and resolve complex technical challenges across multiple concurrent projects. Projects may include gas turbine facilities, reciprocating engine power plants, simple-cycle, and combined-cycle facilities, substations, switchyards, transmission infrastructure, balance of plant systems, and utility interconnections.

STEP INTO THE ROLE

  • Lead the electrical engineering execution of utility-scale gas power generation projects from estimating through construction support and project closeout.

  • Develop preliminary electrical designs for proposals, incorporating power quality, system reliability, constructability, cost efficiency, and Blattner best practices.

  • Lead Basis of Design (BOD) development, electrical engineering reviews, RFIs, and technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Review electrical one-line diagrams, protection and control schemes, grounding systems, cable routing, equipment layouts, substation designs, and third-party engineering packages to ensure quality and compliance.

  • Coordinate electrical engineering activities with Project Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, Construction, Owners, utilities, and Engineers of Record (EOR).

  • Support electrical equipment selection, procurement, vendor evaluations, and technical submittal reviews.

  • Lead constructability reviews, value engineering initiatives, and technical risk assessments to improve project execution and proposal competitiveness.

  • Mentor and develop Engineer I, Engineer II, Senior Engineers, and CAD Designers by providing technical guidance and promoting engineering best practices.

  • Drive electrical engineering standards, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives across Blattner's growing gas power generation portfolio.

  • Serve as the technical electrical engineering resource for complex design challenges throughout all phases of project execution.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited college.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within one year of hire.

  • Seven or more years of progressive electrical engineering experience supporting utility-scale power generation, industrial, EPC, utility, or heavy infrastructure projects.

  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating complex electrical engineering projects.

WHAT SETS YOU APART

  • Experience supporting gas turbine facilities, reciprocating engine generation plants, simple- cycle and combined-cycle power plants, substations, switchyards, transmission infrastructure, or balance of plant electrical systems.

  • Strong knowledge of medium- and high-voltage power systems, utility interconnections, protection and control systems, grounding, power quality, and electrical equipment design.

  • Experience collaborating with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), utilities, EPC partners, and construction teams throughout the engineering lifecycle.

  • Proven ability to lead electrical engineering teams while mentoring and developing technical talent.

  • Passion for driving engineering innovation, establishing electrical design standards, and continuously improving engineering quality.

HOW WE INVEST IN YOU
