What is a remote porting specialist?

Remote Porting Specialists are professionals who manage the process of transferring (or 'porting') phone numbers, internet services, or other telecommunications assets from one provider to another, often working remotely. They coordinate between clients and service providers to ensure a smooth transition with minimal service disruption. Their responsibilities include verifying account information, submitting porting requests, troubleshooting issues, and providing customer support throughout the process. Remote Porting Specialists must have strong communication skills and a good understanding of telecommunications systems. This role is essential for businesses and individuals who need to change service providers without losing connectivity or important data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote porting specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Porting Specialist, you need a solid understanding of telecommunications processes, number portability regulations, and attention to detail, often supported by experience in customer service or telecom environments. Familiarity with porting management systems, databases, and ticketing tools like Salesforce or ServiceNow is typically required. Outstanding problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills help manage customer expectations and coordinate efficiently with carriers and internal teams. These skills ensure the accurate and timely transfer of phone numbers, minimizing service interruptions and enhancing customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by remote porting specialists, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Porting Specialists often encounter challenges such as delays in number transfers, discrepancies in customer information, and coordination across multiple telecom carriers. Successfully managing these issues requires strong attention to detail, proactive communication with both clients and carrier representatives, and a thorough understanding of porting regulations. Being organized and maintaining accurate documentation also helps in resolving issues swiftly and ensuring a smooth porting process.

Job Description

As a Technical Support Specialist at 101VOICE, you'll be at the front line of our UCaaS platform — provisioning and programming VoIP phones, troubleshooting customer issues, and helping ensure every deployment goes smoothly. You'll work closely with our onboarding, engineering, and support teams to deliver a great experience for clients from initial setup through ongoing support.

This is a fully remote role based in Mexico, and we're looking for candidates who are fluent in English (written and verbal) and able to work hours compliant with PST (California).

What You'll Do

  • Configure and program VoIP phones (Poly, Yealink, Cisco, and others) for customer deployment
  • Troubleshoot customer issues on the 101VOICE UCaaS platform — softphones, voicemail, call flows, auto-attendants, and more
  • Support system setups, cutovers, number porting, and new client onboarding
  • Provide tier-1 and tier-2 technical support via phone, email, and ticketing system
  • Monitor system performance and help diagnose issues related to connectivity, call quality, and configuration
  • Document customer interactions, configurations, and resolutions clearly and consistently
  • Train customers on phone usage and portal features
  • Partner with NOC and engineering teams on escalations and service improvements
  • Maintain and update device firmware, templates, and configurations
  • Travel occasionally to customer sites for large deployments or escalations (if local)
Qualifications
  • 1–3 years of experience in technical support, ideally in VoIP or telecommunications
  • Working knowledge of SIP protocols, VoIP phone provisioning, and hosted PBX systems
  • Experience with UCaaS platforms (Broadsoft, Metaswitch, or similar)
  • Solid troubleshooting skills paired with a customer-first mindset
  • Understanding of DHCP, VLANs, NAT/firewall configuration, and general networking basics
  • Comfort managing multiple tickets and projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A detail-oriented, organized approach with strong documentation habits
