A DAY IN THE LIFE
As a Lead Mechanical Engineer - Gas Power Generation, you'll lead the mechanical engineering execution of utility-scale gas power generation projects from proposal development through construction and commissioning. You'll provide technical leadership across mechanical engineering activities while establishing engineering standards, mentoring engineers, and ensuring designs are safe, reliable, constructible, and aligned with client requirements and industry standards.
Your day may involve collaborating with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), Project Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, Construction, equipment manufacturers, and third-party engineering firms to develop mechanical system designs, review engineering packages, coordinate equipment integration, and resolve complex technical challenges across multiple concurrent projects. Projects may include gas turbine facilities, reciprocating engine power plants, simple-cycle and combined-cycle power plants, balance of plant (BOP) systems, mechanical piping systems, cooling systems, fuel gas systems, and auxiliary mechanical equipment.
STEP INTO THE ROLE
- Lead the mechanical engineering execution of utility-scale gas power generation projects from estimating through construction support and project closeout.
- Develop preliminary mechanical designs for proposals that optimize constructability, equipment reliability, safety, cost efficiency, and Blattner best practices.
- Lead Basis of Design (BOD) development, mechanical engineering reviews, RFIs, and technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review mechanical equipment layouts, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), equipment specifications, balance of plant systems, vendor drawings, and third-party engineering packages to ensure quality and compliance.
- Coordinate mechanical engineering activities with Project Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, Construction, Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), and equipment manufacturers.
- Support mechanical equipment selection, procurement strategies, vendor evaluations, and technical submittal reviews.
- Lead constructability reviews, value engineering initiatives, and technical risk assessments that improve project execution and proposal competitiveness.
- Mentor and develop Engineer I, Engineer II, Senior Engineers, and CAD Designers through technical guidance, work product reviews, and engineering best practices.
- Drive mechanical engineering standards, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives across Blattner's growing gas power generation portfolio.
- Support the successful integration of gas turbines, reciprocating engines, balance of plant systems, fuel gas systems, cooling systems, and auxiliary mechanical equipment into complete power generation facilities.
- Serve as the technical mechanical engineering resource for complex design challenges throughout all phases of project execution.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited college.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Seven or more years of progressive mechanical engineering experience supporting utility-scale power generation, industrial facilities, EPC, heavy infrastructure, or related industries.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating complex mechanical engineering projects.
WHAT SETS YOU APART
- Experience supporting gas turbine facilities, reciprocating engine generation plants, simple-cycle and combined-cycle power plants, or balance of plant (BOP) systems.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment layouts, piping systems, fuel gas systems, cooling water systems, auxiliary mechanical equipment, and power generation infrastructure.
- Experience working with gas turbine OEMs, reciprocating engine manufacturers, or EPC firms supporting utility-scale power generation projects.
- Experience collaborating with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), equipment manufacturers, EPC partners, and construction teams throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Proven ability to lead mechanical engineering teams while mentoring and developing technical talent.
- Passion for driving engineering innovation, establishing mechanical engineering standards, and continuously improving engineering quality across complex power generation projects.
