Job description

About Pantheon

Pantheon brings together exceptional builders who take ownership, drive meaningful impact, and shape what's next for the web. We power more than 300,000 websites globally for organizations including Google, Princeton, Salesloft, Clorox, and the United Nations. Every day, thousands of developers and marketers use our WebOps platform to build, iterate, and scale WordPress, Drupal, and Next.js sites that reach billions of people worldwide. As an employer, we operate with the same philosophy that drives our product: foundation and freedom. Pantheon is a vibrant, remote-forward team of experts who care deeply about their craft and results. Here, you take ownership of work that matters, contribute alongside exceptional people, and see the impact you create.

The Opportunity

Pantheon is building the next generation of web content infrastructure - a real-time, collaborative platform that redefines how teams create, publish, and manage content on the modern web. Content management has been largely unchanged for two decades. Pantheon is uniquely positioned - with deep roots in the web platform, a global CDN, and a sophisticated branching model trusted by thousands of organizations - to build the collaborative content experience the modern web deserves.

This is a rare opportunity to join a founding-stage product team at a company with real infrastructure and real distribution behind it. The architecture is being defined now. The decisions made in the next few months will shape how developers and content teams experience the web for years to come.

The Role

As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will be a technical anchor and a hands-on builder. You will own significant pieces of the platform end-to-end - from API design and backend services to frontend systems and browser-side experiences. You will partner closely with the Staff Engineer and Director of Engineering to make architectural decisions, set quality standards, and accelerate the team toward meaningful milestones.

This role requires both breadth and depth. You are comfortable owning a problem from design through delivery, writing the code and the tests, and helping less experienced engineers do the same. You understand that great infrastructure and great product experience are not in tension - they are the same problem viewed from different angles.

What You Need to Succeed
  • Own significant features and platform components end-to-end - from technical design through production delivery
  • Build backend services, APIs, and frontend systems that power a real-time collaborative content platform
  • Contribute meaningfully to architectural decisions - your opinion matters and will be sought
  • Write clean, well-tested code and help establish quality standards for the team - there is no dedicated QA on this team
  • Mentor and support SE II engineers through code review, pairing, and technical guidance
  • Collaborate with product and design to translate ambiguous requirements into concrete technical plans
  • Integrate AI tooling concretely into your development workflow and into the product
  • Help define how the team works - process, standards, and engineering culture are all being built right now
What You Bring to the Table
  • 5-8 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Genuine full-stack capability - you have shipped production systems on both backend (APIs, cloud infrastructure, data services) and frontend (component systems, browser performance, interactive UIs)
  • Strong API design experience: REST, GraphQL, and webhooks - with opinions about when to use each
  • Cloud-native fluency: you have designed and operated services in GCP, AWS, or Azure, not just deployed to them
  • Experience with real-time or collaborative systems is a meaningful plus - live data sync, multiplayer state, event-driven architectures
  • Frontend architecture depth: component modeling, state management, rendering performance
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • You are actively and concretely building with AI - integrating it into products you own or creating tooling that makes AI more effective.
What We Offer

We have all the usual perks and benefits but what we can really offer you is a fantastic work environment powered by an amazing team.

  • Industry competitive compensation and equity plan
  • Flexible time off, sick days, and 13 paid holidays
  • Comprehensive medical insurance including Health, Dental and Vision
  • Paid parental leave (plus fertility, adoption and other family planning benefits)
  • In-office workspace (San Francisco & Chicago)
  • Monthly allowance for wellness, reading and access to LinkedIn Learning for continued development
  • Events and activities both team-based and company wide that inspire, educate and cultivate

Pantheon is an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, disability, or any other classification protected by law. Pantheon complies with federal and local disability laws and makes reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities. If you need a reasonable accommodation due to a disability for any part of the interview process, please contact talent@pantheon.io. Pursuant to local and federal regulations, Pantheon will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records for employment.

After an offer is made and accepted, E-verify will be utilized to establish your identity and employment eligibility as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The US base salary range for this position in the United States is $139,680 - $174,600 USD per year. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. At Pantheon, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
