Remote Nerc System Operator information

What is a remote NERC system operator?

Remote NERC System Operators are professionals certified by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) who monitor and control the operations of electric power systems from a remote location. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the reliability and stability of the electrical grid in accordance with NERC standards. They use specialized software and communication systems to oversee the transmission and distribution of electricity, respond to emergencies, and coordinate with field personnel. Working remotely allows these operators to manage grid operations without being physically present at a control center, making use of secure technology. This role is critical for maintaining continuous power supply and preventing blackouts.

What does a remote NERC system operator do?

As a Remote NERC System Operator, your daily responsibilities include monitoring power grid operations, responding to system alarms, and coordinating with field personnel and other operators to ensure grid reliability and compliance with NERC standards. You will use advanced monitoring tools and communication systems to oversee real-time electric grid performance and may be required to execute switching orders or emergency procedures. Collaboration is key, as you will regularly interact with dispatchers, engineers, and neighboring utilities, often relying on clear communication and documentation to maintain a stable grid environment. The remote aspect means you must be adept at working independently while staying connected with your team through digital platforms.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote NERC system operator?

To thrive as a Remote NERC System Operator, you need a strong understanding of power systems operations, NERC reliability standards, and typically a relevant technical degree or equivalent industry experience. Familiarity with SCADA systems, EMS software, and possession of a valid NERC System Operator Certification are essential. Attention to detail, strong decision-making under pressure, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable grid operations, regulatory compliance, and effective response to grid events in a dynamic environment.

What is the difference between Remote Nerc System Operator vs Remote Nerc Reliability Coordinator?

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and recommend best practices for LMS administration, governance, and long-term sustainability.
  • Provide post-launch support recommendations and perform knowledge transfer to internal LMS administrators to enable smooth transition and ongoing support.
  • Perform additional project-related duties as needed to support a successful LMS implementation and launch.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience with Absorb LMS administration and configuration, including launch readiness activities.
  • Experience in stakeholder and end-user training, including engagement and support during implementation.
  • Experience in UAT planning and execution, as well as data migration and validation in LMS contexts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting compliance-driven training programs and related reporting requirements.
  • Familiarity with SCORM, xAPI, or other eLearning standards and content packaging formats.
  • Experience with LMS integrations, including Single Sign-On (SSO), HRIS, or identity management platforms.
  • Manufacturing, operational, or regulated-industry training experience.
  • Previous experience partnering directly with LMS vendors during implementation projects.
  • Strong understanding of learning management systems, including LMS implementation methodologies and launch readiness best practices.
  • Ability to recommend and implement process improvements and governance models for LMS administration.
  • Commitment to a 3-month engagement, with focus on completing configuration, documentation, training, and launch support within the project timeline.
