What is a remote media?

A Remote Media job refers to any role within the media industry—such as content creation, social media management, marketing, or digital journalism—that can be performed from a location outside of a traditional office, usually from home. These jobs typically involve producing, managing, or distributing digital content via online platforms. Remote Media professionals use various digital tools to collaborate with teams, schedule and publish content, and analyze digital engagement. This flexibility allows for a better work-life balance and access to global job opportunities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote media roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in remote media roles often face challenges such as maintaining effective communication with team members across different time zones, managing project deadlines without in-person supervision, and ensuring access to the necessary technology and software for content creation. These challenges can be addressed by establishing clear communication protocols, utilizing collaborative tools like project management platforms and video conferencing, and proactively coordinating schedules. Many remote media teams also hold regular check-ins to ensure alignment and foster a sense of connection despite physical distance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote media specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Media Specialist, you need expertise in digital content creation, social media management, and a strong understanding of marketing principles, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), graphic design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, and analytics platforms such as Google Analytics is typically required. Strong organizational skills, creativity, and effective virtual communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for producing engaging media content, executing successful campaigns, and collaborating efficiently with remote teams.

Job description

About The Role
Social media is one of the most visible expressions of who Descript is, and right now, we have an opportunity to do it much better. We're hiring a Social Media Manager who understands the new media landscape, knows how to build systems (not just post content), and is excited to make Descript's presence something people really want to follow.
This role goes beyond owned channels. You'll own Descript's employee advocacy program-surveying employees, building training, and enabling them to show up authentically online. You'll support executive thought leadership, working directly with our "first team" executives. And you'll work cross-functionally to make sure launches, campaigns, and content from across the company reach the right social audiences.
What You'll Do
Social Strategy & Execution
  • Own Descript's social presence across channels (LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and others as relevant)
  • Develop channel-specific strategy that plays to each platform's strengths and audience
  • Build a content calendar, publishing cadence, and engagement framework

Content Repurposing & Atomization
  • Build a system to transform one piece of content into multiple platform-native formats
  • Partner with Content, PMM, and Brand to ensure social content is aligned and on-message
  • Produce or direct the production of short-form social content

Community & Engagement
  • Monitor conversations, trends, and brand mentions to engage in the right places, in the right way
  • Build a social listening system that surfaces opportunities for brand participation
  • Develop and maintain a response framework and community management guidelines

Employee Advocacy
  • Build a program that makes it easy for employees to amplify company content and create their own-with Descript as the tool, turning posts into living product demos
  • Design the incentive structure and enablement resources (templates, training, Claude-powered tooling) that drive consistent participation

Executive Social Brand Building
  • Own execution of Descript's executive social program-managing cadence, content production, and platform presence in partnership with the VP of Marketing and PMM on topics and positioning
What You Bring
Minimum Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of social media management experience, ideally in B2B or B2B/B2C hybrid environments
  • Deep familiarity with the current social media and new media landscape
  • Proven ability to build social systems and programs, not just manage a content calendar
  • Strong writer; can produce platform-native content across tones and formats
  • Data-informed approach to optimization and growth

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building or running an employee advocacy program
  • Experience supporting exec communications or thought leadership
  • Background in content repurposing or multimedia content production
  • Familiarity with Descript or similar creative and video tools
Success In This Role
Within your first 12 months, you will:
  • Deliver a documented social strategy with channel prioritization and measurement framework
  • Launch Descript's employee advocacy program, including training curriculum and enabling tooling
  • Establish executive thought leadership support for at least 3 Descript leaders
  • Show measurable audience growth and engagement improvement across owned channels

The base salary range for this role is $110k - 140k/year. Final offer amounts will carefully consider multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, location, level, and may vary from the amount above.
About Descript
Descript is building a simple, intuitive, fully-powered editing tool for video and audio - an editing tool built for the age of AI. We are a team of 150 and the backing of some of the world's greatest investors (OpenAI, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Spark Capital).
Descript is the special company that's in possession of both product market fit and the raw materials (passionate user community, great product, large market) for growth, but is still early enough that each new employee has a measurable influence on the direction of the company.
Benefits include a generous healthcare package, 401k matching program, catered lunches, and flexible vacation time. Our headquarters are located in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA. We're hiring for a mix of remote roles and hybrid roles. For those who are remote, we have a handful of opportunities throughout the year for in person collaboration. For our hybrid roles, we're flexible, and you're an adult-we don't expect or mandate that you're in the office every day. We do believe there are valuable and serendipitous moments of discovery and collaboration that come from working together in person.
Descript is an equal opportunity workplace-we are dedicated to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status. We believe in actively building a team rich in diverse backgrounds, experiences, and opinions to better allow our employees, products, and community to thrive.
