What is remote math teaching?

Remote math teaching involves instructing students in mathematics through online platforms rather than in a traditional classroom setting. Teachers use digital tools such as video conferencing, virtual whiteboards, and interactive assignments to deliver lessons and support student learning. This format allows both educators and learners to participate from different locations, offering flexibility and access to education regardless of geographic barriers. Remote math teachers may work for schools, tutoring companies, or as independent educators. The role requires strong communication skills and the ability to adapt teaching methods to a virtual environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Math Teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Math Teacher, you need strong mathematical knowledge, teaching credentials or a degree in education, and experience in curriculum development. Familiarity with online teaching platforms (such as Zoom or Google Classroom), digital whiteboards, and assessment tools is essential. Excellent communication, patience, and adaptability help engage students and address diverse learning needs in a virtual setting. These skills ensure effective instruction, foster student understanding, and maintain a productive remote classroom environment.

Both roles serve students online but differ in scope, structure, and employment type.

What are some common challenges faced by remote math teachers and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge for remote math teachers is engaging students and ensuring active participation in a virtual setting. It can be harder to gauge understanding and adjust instruction without face-to-face cues. To address this, teachers often use interactive tools such as virtual whiteboards, breakout rooms, and regular formative assessments. Building strong communication with students and parents, setting clear expectations, and providing timely feedback are also essential strategies for overcoming remote teaching barriers.

Description
About K12 Coalition
K12 Coalition provides products and services that help K-12 schools and teachers achieve transformational learning outcomes. We tackle many of today's toughest education obstacles, including teacher certification, test preparation, professional learning, curriculum, consulting, and strategic planning. K12 Coalition came together when educators with deep experience as teachers, school leaders and high-level district administrators observed a genuine need for something better. Our divisions include iteach, Passage Preparation, Teaching Channel, and Lavinia Group.
About Lavinia Group
Lavinia Group is dedicated to driving meaningful academic improvements in K-12 education through instructional coaching, professional learning, high-quality curriculum, strategic planning, and summer school support that enhances educator effectiveness and strengthens student outcomes.
With deep expertise in school leadership, curriculum implementation, and instructional best practices, Lavinia Group delivers tailored, research-based solutions to meet the evolving needs of our partners. Guided by a commitment to equity, instructional excellence, and long-term capacity building, we work alongside educators and district leaders through hands-on coaching, immersive training, and collaborative partnerships. Our mission is to help schools achieve transformational learning outcomes that endure beyond our direct support.
Employment Type: Part-Time Variable/Hourly
Location: This is a remote position with expectations of on-site partnership. Due to the location of client sites and travel requirements, this role is open to candidates who reside in the Tri-State area (New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut) with a preference to New York City.
Travel: This position requires weekly travel to partner school sites, typically up to four days per week. While we strive to assign consultants to clients within the same region of the country, we cannot guarantee that travel will be limited to the Tri-State area. Consultants should expect that client sites may require out-of-state or overnight travel.
Please plan to spend up to 7-8 hours per day onsite at assigned schools.
The Opportunity
At School Solutions, a division of K12 Coalition, Educational Consultants play a critical role in directly supporting partner schools across the country to achieve world-class instruction through effective professional development and instructional coaching.
We are seeking multiple Educational Consultants with math expertise (secondary math preferred) and multiple Educational Consultants with English Language Arts instruction to support schools in delivering high-impact coaching and instructional support. The ideal candidate has led teams to achieve strong academic outcomes in diverse educational settings, and brings a passion for coaching and developing educators.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our mission of closing opportunity gaps and ensuring excellent, equitable instruction. Educational Consultants will work onsite in schools, providing daily, embedded coaching rooted in best practices for literacy and inclusive education.
What You'll Do
Strategic Planning and Content Development
  • Strategically set the vision for high-impact instruction and implementation of math curriculum, and instructional models in a set of school or network/district partnerships to ensure strong and equitable outcomes for all students
  • Design and develop instructional materials and resources tailored to each partner's specific needs and strategy - this includes adapting existing School Solutions materials and creating new content when needed
  • Ensure that high-quality, impactful instructional management plans, professional development, and coaching services are provided to teachers, instructional coaches, building leaders, and system leaders
  • Engage in collaborative team structures to ensure alignment between School Solutions team members and to continuously improve School Solutions' instructional tools

Coaching and Instruction
  • Coach and support teachers in implementing research-based math interventions, ELA interventions and HQIM
  • Deliver model math lessons and classroom demonstrations to support teacher development and highlight instructional best practices
  • Model the intellectual preparation process and build the skill and capacity of leaders and teachers to plan confidently and independently
  • Actively monitor progress of partners through onsite coaching, ongoing data analysis, and meetings with key stakeholders

Other Duties
  • Support the team with additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to help meet evolving organizational goals and objectives

How We Work at K12 Coalition
Our work is grounded in five Core Competencies that guide how we collaborate, support others, and move work forward: Accountability, Adaptability, Collaboration, Customer Service Orientation, and Initiative.
  • Accountability: Following through on work, owning commitments, and communicating progress or challenges along the way.
  • Adaptability: Navigating change with flexibility and focus as priorities, information, or needs shift.
  • Collaboration: Working together across roles and perspectives to achieve shared goals.
  • Customer Service Orientation: Meeting the needs of internal and external partners with clarity, responsiveness, and follow-through.
  • Initiative: Taking action without waiting to be asked and looking for ways to improve systems, processes, or experiences.

Qualifications
  • Due to the location of client sites and travel requirements, this role is open to candidates who reside in the Tri-State area (New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut) and able to reliably commute to New York City public schools for in-person coaching
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in secondary math education or Algebra I content expertise strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of experience teaching, coaching, and leading in an elementary or secondary math setting
  • 3+ years of K-12 leadership experience as an assistant principal, principal, charter or district-level director or managing director, or superintendent
  • Experience working with diverse learner populations - including students with special education needs, multilingual learners, and students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds - across charter, public, and private school settings
  • Track record of achieving strong academic outcomes in a school setting working across grades K-12
  • Strong writing and communication skills, including experience leading both virtual and in-person professional learning
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and balance multiple demands while working across several partner schools
  • Knowledge of the Common Core State Standards preferred

Compensation Range
The estimated daily rate for each piece of onsite work ranges from $645 to $845 per day, inclusive of preparatory time. This calculation is based on:
  • $100/hour for onsite work or virtual billable time
  • $30/hour for non-billable time, such as preparation or internal meetings

Our Selection Process
Our selection process typically includes an online application, short phone interview, hiring manager interview, candidate exercise, and final interview.
