What are Remote Marine Automation Engineers?

Remote Marine Automation Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and maintain automated systems on marine vessels and offshore platforms, often working from remote locations. They ensure that critical systems such as navigation, propulsion, and safety operate efficiently and reliably, using advanced technologies and remote monitoring tools. Their work helps improve vessel performance, safety, and operational efficiency, and often involves troubleshooting and supporting equipment through remote diagnostics. These engineers may collaborate with onsite crews and other technical teams to resolve issues and optimize system performance.

What is the difference between Remote Marine Automation Engineer vs Remote Marine Electronics Technician?

AspectRemote Marine Automation EngineerRemote Marine Electronics Technician
Required CertificationsMarine Engineering, Automation CertificationsElectronics, Marine Electronics Certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, programming, system integrationInstallation, troubleshooting, maintenance
Industry UsageShip systems, automation projectsNavigation, communication, electronic systems

The Remote Marine Automation Engineer focuses on designing and programming automation systems for ships, while the Remote Marine Electronics Technician handles installation and maintenance of electronic systems. Both roles require technical certifications and work within the marine industry, but their daily tasks and responsibilities differ significantly.

How does a Remote Marine Automation Engineer typically collaborate with vessel crews and on-site engineers?

Remote Marine Automation Engineers often work closely with vessel crews and on-site engineers via digital communication tools such as video calls, remote desktop support, and specialized monitoring platforms. They provide real-time troubleshooting, system diagnostics, and guidance during maintenance or upgrades, ensuring minimal downtime for maritime operations. Effective collaboration relies on clear communication and a solid understanding of both automation systems and the day-to-day realities faced by crew members. This role may also involve coordinating with other remote experts or vendors to deliver comprehensive solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Marine Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Marine Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or marine engineering, automation systems, and relevant industry certifications such as STCW or Siemens/ABB product training. Proficiency with PLCs, SCADA systems, remote monitoring software, and marine communication protocols is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills set top performers apart, especially when troubleshooting remotely. These skills ensure safe, reliable vessel operations and quick resolution of automation issues without physical presence on board.

Job Summary

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Automation Engineer to lead the rapid delivery of high-impact automation solutions within a healthcare payer environment. In this role, you will act as the Lead Developer and Automation Solution Architect, analyzing complex business workflows across Clinical, Enrollment, Provider, and IT operations. You will own the assessment phase to identify high-ROI opportunities and prioritize modern Generative AI approaches over legacy RPA methods to reduce maintenance overhead and build scalable, autonomous processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process Mining & Discovery: Lead workshops with stakeholders to map workflows. Identify manual, repetitive tasks and quantify potential time savings and ROI for automation initiatives.

  • Solution Architecture: Design end-to-end workflows integrating modern cloud applications (e.g., SharePoint) with healthcare-specific data systems and big data platforms (e.g., Databricks).

  • Generative AI Implementation: Leverage AI tools (e.g., Gemini, Claude) to replace complex rule-based scraping with intelligent parsing. Use LLMs to summarize clinical notes or extract data from unstructured provider communications.

  • Advanced Development: Build complex automations using Power Automate Desktop and Cloud Flows. Manage advanced logic, error handling, and exception management using modern AI connectors.

  • Governance & Mentorship: Establish coding standards and "Secure by Design" principles for the automation team. Provide technical guidance and perform code reviews for junior engineering staff.

  • Integration Strategy: Develop custom connectors or scripts using PowerShell, Python, or JSON to bridge gaps where native out-of-the-box connectors do not exist.

Education & Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.

  • General Experience: 8+ years in Software Development or Data Engineering with a strong emphasis on ETL.

  • Power Platform Expertise: 5+ years of expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Power Platform (Cloud and Desktop flows).

  • Data & Integration: 5+ years of experience with SQL/NoSQL environments and complex API integrations (REST/SOAP) within a healthcare context.

  • AI & Unstructured Data: Proven success processing large volumes of unstructured medical data using OCR, NLP, and Document AI. Demonstrated ability to use GenAI APIs to structure data.

  • Operational Leadership: Experience managing bot deployment in virtualized environments and ensuring 24/7 operational stability.

  • Domain Expertise: Proven experience automating workflows in a Healthcare Payer setting (e.g., Enrollment, Provider Credentialing, or Clinical Prior Authorization).

Core Competencies
  • Full Stack Capability: Ability to move seamlessly between low-code environments and pro-code development (Python/C#) as needed.

  • Data Fluency: Deep understanding of ETL pipelines and the transformation of unstructured data into vectorized formats.

  • Legacy System Navigation: Specialized knowledge in extracting and injecting data into legacy applications that lack native API support.

  • Performance Tuning: Expertise in optimizing script execution to minimize latency and resource consumption.
