Job description

Apple is where individual imaginations gather together, committing to the values that lead to great work. Every new product we build, service we create, or Apple Store experience we deliver is the result of us making each other’s ideas stronger. That happens because every one of us shares a belief that we can make something wonderful and share it with the world, changing lives for the better. It’s the diversity of our people and their thinking that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do. When we bring everybody in, we can do the best work of our lives. Here, you’ll do more than join something - you’ll add something.
As an engineer in the Special Projects group, you will have an opportunity to be part of an innovation-focused organization within Apple that is exploring overlapping space between simulation and AI/ML. You will be able to work on highly ambitious, high-reward, and impactful projects in the early stages of development. This team has a strong focus on shipping simulation technology in service of AI/ML projects. We use both traditional and generative AI techniques in simulation. Our ideal team member is fearless when it comes to trying new things and is willing to iterate on ideas. We value team members who can quickly prototype, iterating all the way to high-quality implementations. Moreover, we value team members who can collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams across the organization.
Description
Our team develops a platform for running large-scale integration tests in simulation, using both virtual devices and physical hardware. You will help develop multiple aspects of this tooling including the launcher, runtime, frontend, backend and database. This team has a strong focus on efficiency and quality, ensuring that this system delivers results promptly without sacrificing correctness. Our ideal team member is highly motivated to pursue improvements and able to drive them to completion.","responsibilities":"Drive down the cost and duration of a test run through parallelism, smarter scheduling, and better use of the hardware fleet
Build and maintain the backend service and web front end engineers use to launch runs, browse results, and track quality trends over time
Keep the platform current as the products it tests evolve, absorbing platform and API changes to unblock developers
Monitor deployments and test results to deliver a fast response when the pipeline is down and engineers are blocked
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with virtualization and managing fleets of virtual or physical machines as a shared resource
Experience building test infrastructure, CI/CD systems, or developer tooling at scale
Working knowledge of a systems language such as Swift or C++
Familiarity with Apple platforms
Experience with authentication and authorization in production systems (OIDC/OAuth, certificate-based auth) and a working understanding of applied cryptography
Experience serving or evaluating machine learning models in production
Minimum Qualifications
Strong software engineering fundamentals and deep proficiency in Python
Experience building and deploying HTTP services (FastAPI, Flask, or similar) and working with relational databases (Postgres or similar)
Experience with frontend technologies such as React or a comparable framework
Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure: containers and Kubernetes, object storage, and managed compute
Solid command of networking and remote-execution fundamentals: TCP/IP, HTTP, WebSockets, SSH, and file transfer over the network
Comfort debugging across layers, from a failing test in a web UI down through a service, a VM, and the operating system it runs on
Strong operating systems background on Linux, macOS, or a comparable platform
BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
