What are remote lactation counselors?

Remote lactation counselors are certified professionals who provide breastfeeding support and education to parents via phone, video calls, or online platforms instead of in-person visits. They help with common breastfeeding challenges, answer questions, and offer guidance on issues such as latch, milk supply, and pumping. Remote lactation counselors make it easier for new parents to access expert advice from the comfort of their own homes, especially in areas where in-person services may be limited.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Lactation Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Lactation Counselor, you need a solid understanding of lactation management, breastfeeding support, and typically a certification such as IBCLC, CLC, or CLEC. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure communication tools, and electronic documentation systems is essential. Exceptional empathy, active listening, and clear virtual communication help build trust and rapport with clients remotely. These skills ensure accurate guidance, effective client support, and positive breastfeeding outcomes in a virtual care environment.
