What is a remote junior software developer?

Remote Junior Software Developers are entry-level programmers who work from locations outside of a traditional office setting. They are responsible for assisting in the development, testing, and maintenance of software applications under the guidance of more experienced developers. These roles typically require knowledge of programming languages, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate using online tools. Remote junior developers often participate in code reviews, write basic code, and fix bugs while gaining practical experience in the software development industry.

What does a remote junior software developer do?

As a remote junior software developer, you work from home writing code for computer programs. You also maintain and test existing software and applications. Specifically, your duties focus on using a computer language to debug software or to write code for a program as part of a team of developers. You handle your coding responsibilities under the supervision of a more-experienced developer or software engineer. You may develop software for a specific operating system or network. Because you work remotely, you must communicate and follow up with other members of your development team using virtual management and chat applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote junior software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Junior Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), computer science fundamentals, and often a relevant degree or coding bootcamp certification. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), code editors, and collaboration tools such as Slack or Jira is typically required. Strong self-motivation, effective written communication, and problem-solving abilities help you stand out in remote environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable code, collaborating efficiently with distributed teams, and adapting to the fast-paced nature of software development.

How do remote junior software developers typically collaborate with their teams when working from different locations?

Remote Junior Software Developers usually work closely with their teams through digital collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms like Jira or Trello. Regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and pair programming sessions help maintain clear communication and ensure alignment on project goals. While working remotely can present challenges like limited face-to-face interaction and the need for proactive communication, most teams foster a supportive environment through mentorship and frequent check-ins. This structure not only helps junior developers learn quickly but also keeps them engaged and integrated with the team.

Job description

Integration Developer โ€“ Integrations, Data & AI Solutions

Location: Pewaukee, WI / Hybrid or Remote Considered

Belong to the Boelter community that brings people together...

We value the individual where your unique perspective builds a stronger community and fuels our passion for authentic relationships.

Boelter is looking for an Intermediate Developer who is ready to help shape the next generation of business technology. This role is ideal for a creative, curious, and self-driven developer who enjoys solving practical business problems, integrating enterprise systems, and exploring how AI can make work faster, smarter, and more scalable.

As part of a strong and collaborative IT team, this person will work across key platforms including SAP, Microsoft Fabric, Cleo Integration Cloud for EDI, data warehouse solutions, and emerging AI-enabled tools. The work will focus on building reliable integrations, improving business processes, strengthening data flow across systems, and creating efficiency solutions that help Boelter associates serve customers better.

Why This Role Is Exciting
  • Be part of Boelterโ€™s growing AI journey, where new ideas are being tested, piloted, and scaled into real business solutions.
  • Work with enterprise platforms that matter, including SAP, Microsoft Fabric, Cleo, EDI, data warehouse tools, and modern integration patterns.
  • Use AI not only as a personal productivity enhancer, but as a way to improve applications, automate manual work, and create better user experiences.
  • Join a team that values experimentation, practical problem solving, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
  • Make a visible impact by helping simplify processes, improve data quality, reduce manual effort, and enable smarter decisions across the business.
What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design, build, test, and support integrations between core business systems such as SAP, Microsoft Fabric, Cleo, EDI partners, data warehouse environments, and internal business applications.
  • Develop solutions that improve process efficiency, reduce manual work, and support cleaner, more reliable data movement across the enterprise.
  • Partner with business users, analysts, and other IT team members to understand needs, clarify requirements, and deliver practical technology solutions.
  • Support EDI and integration workflows, including troubleshooting data movement, monitoring failures, improving exception handling, and strengthening reliability.
  • Use AI tools thoughtfully to accelerate development, improve documentation, support testing, analyze business processes, and identify automation opportunities.
  • Contribute to AI-enabled solution design, including agents, assistants, automation flows, data-driven recommendations, and productivity-enhancing tools.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, integration notes, support guides, and knowledge-sharing materials for the broader team.
  • Continuously learn new tools and approaches, bringing forward ideas that can improve how Boelter works and serves customers.
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • 3โ€“5+ years of professional software development, integration, data engineering, or business systems development experience.
  • Hands-on experience integrating enterprise systems, APIs, databases, middleware, EDI platforms, or business applications.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP environments, including data flows, business processes, interfaces, or reporting needs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, data warehouse concepts, SQL, ETL/ELT patterns, or modern analytics platforms.
  • Experience with Cleo Integration Cloud, EDI, or similar integration tools is a plus.
  • Practical understanding of automation, workflow improvement, and process efficiency solutions.
  • Strong curiosity about AI tools and a demonstrated willingness to use them responsibly to improve personal productivity, development quality, documentation, testing, and solution design.
  • Creative problem solver who is comfortable asking questions, learning new systems, and turning business needs into reliable technical solutions.
  • Self-driven and accountable, with the ability to manage work independently while actively contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to business partners and teammates.
How Youโ€™ll Work

This role is designed for someone who thrives in a team-oriented environment but does not wait to be told what to do. You will have the opportunity to take ownership, explore new technologies, recommend better approaches, and help turn ideas into working solutions. We are looking for someone who brings energy, curiosity, and craftsmanship to the workโ€”and who sees AI as both a tool for getting better individually and a platform for creating smarter business solutions.

Our Values

At Boelter, how we work matters as much as what we deliver. We look for team members who bring our values to life through their actions, decisions, and relationships.

  • Do Whatโ€™s Right: Build solutions with integrity, reliability, security, and long-term business value in mind.
  • Own It: Take accountability for your work, follow through on commitments, and continuously look for ways to improve.
  • Make It Easy: Simplify processes, reduce friction, and create technology solutions that are practical and easy for associates and customers to use.
  • Win Together: Collaborate across IT and the business, share knowledge, and help others succeed.
  • Be Curious: Ask thoughtful questions, learn continuously, experiment with new tools, and explore how AI can unlock better ways of working.
Why Boelter

Boelter is investing in modern technology, better data, stronger integrations, and practical AI-enabled solutions that help our teams work smarter and serve customers better. This is a chance to join a company where technology is not just a support function it is a driver of innovation, efficiency, and competitive advantage.

For a developer who wants to grow, learn, and contribute to meaningful transformation, this role offers the opportunity to work with enterprise platforms, influence how AI is applied in real business scenarios, and be part of a team that is building the future of work at Boelter.

Ideal Candidate Summary

The ideal candidate is an intermediate developer who combines technical capability with curiosity, initiative, and a strong desire to solve business problems. They are comfortable working with integration, data, EDI, and automation; excited by the potential of AI; and motivated by the opportunity to help create practical solutions that improve how people work every day.
