Job description

Company Description
We are a boutique IT recruiting agency that strictly works with IT consulting companies and managed services providers. We place candidates on a permanent, full time basis (no contract or contract-to-hire positions).
Job Description
Senior Project Engineer - MSP / IT Infrastructure
Remote / Work From Home
$90,000-$95,000 + Benefits
Occasional Travel to Southern California / Los Angeles County
We are recruiting for a Senior Project Engineer opportunity with an established managed IT services company that has been serving small and midsized businesses for more than 25 years.
This is a hands-on technical position for an experienced MSP infrastructure engineer who enjoys owning projects from beginning to end.
This is not a traditional Project Manager role.
You will work directly with clients to understand their technical needs, evaluate existing environments, help scope and design infrastructure projects, build an organized implementation plan and then personally perform much of the engineering work required to successfully complete those projects.
Depending on the size of the engagement, you may also coordinate other engineers and technicians, but you will remain technically involved and accountable for the successful delivery of the solution.
The ideal candidate is the type of senior MSP engineer who can walk into a client environment, understand what is there, determine what needs to change, develop the technical approach and then get the work done.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead IT infrastructure projects from initial technical discovery through successful completion
  • Meet with clients to understand business requirements, technical problems, existing infrastructure and desired outcomes
  • Assess client environments and help develop appropriate technical solutions
  • Scope project requirements including equipment, licensing, engineering effort, dependencies and implementation needs
  • Translate approved scopes of work into organized technical implementation plans
  • Personally perform hands-on project engineering and implementation
  • Build, configure, migrate and upgrade Windows Server environments
  • Deploy and migrate Active Directory domains, domain controllers, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP
  • Design and implement Microsoft 365 and Azure solutions
  • Deploy and manage Hyper-V and VMware virtual environments
  • Configure and replace firewalls, routers, switches, wireless infrastructure and VPNs
  • Perform network and infrastructure refresh projects
  • Lead server migrations, cloud migrations, Microsoft 365 implementations and other client infrastructure projects
  • Develop migration, cutover, testing and rollback plans
  • Coordinate vendors, client contacts and internal technical resources when necessary
  • Troubleshoot technical problems that arise during project implementation
  • Validate completed work through testing and quality assurance
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, configurations, diagrams and project records
  • Deliver completed environments to support teams with a clean and organized handoff
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities across different client environments

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of hands-on IT infrastructure experience in an MSP or IT consulting environment
  • Strong Windows Server administration and engineering experience
  • Strong Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP experience
  • Experience building and migrating Windows Server and Active Directory environments
  • Strong Microsoft 365 administration and migration experience
  • Hands-on Microsoft Azure experience
  • Strong networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching and VPNs
  • Experience configuring and deploying business-class firewalls
  • Experience with Hyper-V and/or VMware ESXi
  • Experience designing, scoping and implementing infrastructure projects for SMB clients
  • Ability to independently evaluate an existing client environment and determine an appropriate technical solution
  • Ability to estimate technical requirements, identify dependencies and develop an organized implementation approach
  • Strong troubleshooting ability across server, cloud and network environments
  • Ability to communicate technical recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical clients
  • Strong documentation, organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision

Particularly Relevant Project Experience
We are especially interested in candidates who have personally led and implemented projects involving:
  • Windows Server replacements and migrations
  • Active Directory and domain migrations
  • Microsoft 365 migrations and tenant implementations
  • Azure infrastructure projects
  • VMware and Hyper-V deployments or migrations
  • Firewall and network replacements
  • Office moves and infrastructure refreshes
  • Backup and disaster recovery implementations
  • New client infrastructure deployments
  • Multi-site network projects

Helpful Experience
Experience with any of the following is helpful but not required:
  • HaloPSA
  • Kaseya
  • NinjaOne
  • Hudu
  • IT Glue
  • ConnectWise
  • Datto

Why Consider This Opportunity?
This company has been serving businesses for more than 25 years and has built an unusually stable employee and client base.
The company places a strong emphasis on autonomy, work-life balance, mature operating processes and long-term employee retention.
Additional highlights include:
  • Remote work
  • Comprehensive benefits
  • Very low employee turnover
  • Long-term client relationships
  • Mature technical processes and documentation
  • Dedicated support teams handling ongoing day-to-day client support
  • 24/7/365 technical coverage
  • Minimal micromanagement
  • Significant autonomy over your work
  • Long-term career opportunity with an established MSP

Compensation and Travel
The salary range for this position is $90,000-$95,000, depending on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
This is a remote, work-from-home position.
Candidates must be willing and able to travel to Southern California / Los Angeles County for initial training and approximately 1-2 times per year thereafter for company meetings or other business needs.
If you are an experienced MSP engineer who enjoys owning technical projects from discovery and design through implementation and completion, we would like to hear from you.
