How does a Remote Interim Fire Chief effectively manage and support on-site teams without being physically present at the fire station?

A Remote Interim Fire Chief typically relies on a combination of virtual communication tools, regular video meetings, and clear delegation to oversee on-site teams. They maintain close contact with station leaders, conduct remote briefings, and use digital platforms to monitor incident reports and operational readiness. Building strong relationships and trust with local captains and department heads is essential for effective leadership. While remote, they must be proactive in addressing challenges, supporting team morale, and ensuring protocols are followed, often traveling periodically for in-person visits when necessary.

What is a Remote Interim Fire Chief?

A Remote Interim Fire Chief is a temporary leader of a fire department who manages operations, personnel, and emergency response efforts from a remote location. This role is often filled when a department is between permanent fire chiefs or undergoing transitions and needs experienced oversight. The remote aspect means the chief uses technology to coordinate with staff, oversee daily functions, and ensure compliance with safety standards. This arrangement can provide stability and leadership until a permanent, on-site chief is appointed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Interim Fire Chief, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Interim Fire Chief, you need extensive firefighting experience, leadership abilities, and usually a degree in fire science or a related field. Familiarity with incident management systems, emergency communication platforms, and relevant certifications such as Fire Officer or Chief Fire Officer are common requirements. Strong decision-making, crisis management, and excellent interpersonal skills help build trust with remote teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure effective emergency response, organizational continuity, and strong leadership during transitional periods.

Our mission is to empower businesses to achieve financial clarity and sustainable growth. In this full-time (~40 hours/week) contractor role, you will serve as a trusted advisor to a diverse portfolio of clients navigating transformation, rapid growth, operational improvements, fundraising, M&A, and exit preparation. This is a hands-on, entrepreneurial opportunity for a finance leader who thrives in fast-paced environments and enjoys working across industries.

Position Overview

As an Interim CFO, you will step into organizations during critical transition periodsโ€”whether covering a leave of absence, filling a gap between permanent CFOs, supporting a restructuring, or stabilizing the finance function during rapid growth. You will provide immediate executive-level financial leadership, ensuring continuity, stability, and strategic direction while maintaining business momentum. You will be accountable for client satisfaction, deliverable accuracy, timeliness, and overall engagement success.

Our clients include startups, scale-ups, privately held companies, and VC- and PE-backed organizations across a wide range of industries such as Technology, SaaS, Professional Services, Construction, Manufacturing, eCommerce, Healthcare, CPG, FinTech, Real Estate, and more.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a strategic partner and โ€œright handโ€ to CEOs and executive teams

  • Develop and execute comprehensive financial strategies aligned with business goals

  • Build and maintain financial models, rolling forecasts, and cash flow projections

  • Lead budgeting processes and analyze budget-to-actual performance

  • Identify and monitor key financial trends, KPIs, and business metrics

  • Develop executive dashboards and board-ready reporting packages

  • Support and lead fundraising efforts, including venture capital and private equity transactions

  • Lead M&A initiatives, including due diligence, valuation support, and post-acquisition integration

  • Oversee or directly manage month-end close processes and financial reporting

  • Assess and improve accounting processes, systems, and internal controls

  • Coordinate annual audits and manage tax return processes

  • Present financial results and strategic insights to Boards of Directors and shareholders

  • Lead client onboarding engagements, including financial assessments and transition planning

Ideal Candidate Profile
  • 15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience

  • Several years serving as a full-time CFO

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree required; CPA license and/or MBA strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated experience as a strategic financial leader and executive partner

  • Proven success working with fast-growth companies

  • Extensive experience building financial forecasts and cash flow models

  • Strong background in M&A, including due diligence and integration

  • Experience raising capital, particularly within the venture capital ecosystem

  • Comfortable operating in both strategic and hands-on capacities

  • Experience working across multiple industries

  • Strong ERP and accounting systems experience (QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, and similar platforms)

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; Google Sheets experience a plus

  • Entrepreneurial mindset with exceptional communication and leadership skills
