To thrive as a Remote Geriatric Counselor, you need a background in psychology, social work, or counseling, often supported by a relevant master's degree and licensure. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and electronic documentation systems is typically required. Compassion, active listening, and strong communication skills are essential for building trust and engaging effectively with elderly clients remotely. Remote geriatric counselors often encounter challenges such as building rapport with older clients through virtual platforms and addressing technology barriers. Many clients may be unfamiliar with video conferencing tools or feel uncomfortable discussing sensitive topics online. To overcome these obstacles, counselors can offer clear instructions for using technology, remain patient and flexible, and utilize phone sessions if video is not feasible. Remote counseling can address a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, grief, and adjustment to life changes.
