The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Docket Clerk to join our Washington, D.C. office. The Senior Docket Clerk assists with maintaining the litigation calendar for the Washington, D.C. office Managing Law Clerks ("MLC") department, processes complex filings in various state and federal courts and agencies. The Senior Docket Clerk also provides strategic calendar guidance, answers procedural questions, and conducts docket research, using advanced online litigation software tools. Please note that the Firm will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position.

  • Dockets and calendars deadlines through the Firm's calendar software, Milana.
  • Utilizes various software systems and internal Firm reports to onboard new client-matters.
  • Collaborates with the Managing Clerk to standardize calendaring procedures and streamline department workflow processes.
  • Prepares and issues calendar software reports.
  • Conducts comprehensive reviews of daily and weekly litigation calendars, utilizing automated checks and reports to rectify any discrepancies.
  • Reviews documents for rule compliance prior to service and filing.
  • Processes complex filings in various jurisdictions.
  • Proactively provides litigation support services by utilizing content compiled in the Managing Law Clerks Database. These services include sending litigators deadlines, filing requirements, sample precedent and rules at the outset of litigation.
  • Conducts docket research using various vendor platforms to support attorneys with procedural guidance, filings and case strategies.
  • Coordinates brief printing, service of process, and court reporter requests.
  • Provides training and support to junior members of MLC team on calendaring and filing procedures while emphasizing department best practices and procedures.
  • Performs departmental administrative functions, including timely submission of vendor invoices, department file maintenance, and electronic organization of department records.
  • Confirms filings, services of process related documents, and document retrieval requests are placed in the department database, ensuring retention of department analytics.
  • Utilizes vendor PacerPro to onboard any new federal court action(s) where a Skadden attorney has or will appear.
  • Notifies the Managing Clerk promptly of any filing, vendor, or operational issues that may arise within the department.
  • Provides accurate and timely responses to business services professionals and counsel.
  • Stays current on understanding Firm policies, industry trends, and professional development opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local rules of practice and procedures with the ability to stay current on changes
  • Expert proficiency in a legal calendar software program
  • Advanced skills in navigating and utilizing various electronic databases (e.g. Pacer, Westlaw, and Lexis) and online research tools
  • Proficiency in relevant firm software programs (e.g., Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), with the ability to learn new systems
  • Comprehensive understanding of electronic filing requirements in various jurisdictions
  • Exceptional analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and planning skills, with the ability to leverage technology for efficiency and risk mitigation
  • Ability to obtain job related certifications, including notary public
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrates close attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and shifting priorities
  • Ability to work well in a demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work well independently as well as effectively within a team
  • Flexibility to adjust hours and work the hours necessary to meet operating and business needs

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in a law firm or professional services environment

The starting base salary for this position is expected to be within the range listed under Salary Details. Actual salary will be determined based on skills, experience (to the extent relevant) and other-job related factors, consistent with applicable law.
