Remote Epic Software Tester information

What does a Remote Epic Software Tester do?

A Remote Epic Software Tester is responsible for evaluating and validating the functionality, performance, and reliability of Epic electronic health record (EHR) software from a remote location. They create and execute test cases, identify bugs or issues, document results, and collaborate with development and implementation teams to ensure the software meets quality standards and user requirements. Their work helps healthcare organizations maintain efficient and error-free digital records, contributing to patient safety and compliance with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Epic Software Tester?

To thrive as a Remote Epic Software Tester, you need expertise in software testing methodologies, familiarity with Epic electronic health record (EHR) systems, and a background in healthcare IT, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency in Epic testing tools, test automation software, and certifications like Epic Test Analyst or Epic Proficiency are typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help testers collaborate remotely and identify system issues efficiently. These skills ensure that critical healthcare software is reliable, compliant, and able to support patient care without disruptions.

What are some unique challenges faced by Remote Epic Software Testers when collaborating with healthcare teams?

Remote Epic Software Testers often work closely with clinical and IT staff across different locations and time zones, which can present communication and coordination challenges. Ensuring clear understanding of clinical workflows and translating those into effective test cases requires proactive communication and strong documentation skills. Additionally, testers must be adept at using collaboration tools and adapting to the fast-paced changes typical in healthcare IT projects. Building relationships remotely and staying aligned with project goals are key to success in this role.

Job description

The Team:

Upstart's Developer Platform team enables engineers to build, test, and validate software quickly, consistently, and with confidence. We own foundational systems and workflows engineers rely on before software reaches production, including build and continuous integration infrastructure, ephemeral environments, shared test infrastructure, and developer tooling.

Our goal is to make the path from code change to deployable software fast, reliable, and self-service. We build platforms that provide trusted feedback early, enable engineers to validate changes in production-like environments, and make common development and testing capabilities easy to adopt across engineering. We partner closely with Delivery, Cloud Platform, Site Reliability Engineering, Security, and product engineering teams to create a cohesive developer experience.

As a Software Engineer II, Developer Platform at Upstart, you will build and operate systems used by engineers across Upstart to develop, test, and prepare software for production. You'll work across continuous integration infrastructure, Kubernetes-based ephemeral environments, test infrastructure, and developer tooling while independently delivering well-scoped engineering projects and contributing to technical design.

How you'll make an impact:
  • Build and improve services, infrastructure, and developer tooling that power continuous integration, ephemeral environments, and automated testing across Upstart
  • Develop scalable Kubernetes- and AWS-based capabilities that enable engineers to create and use production-like environments through reliable, self-service workflows
  • Build shared infrastructure for test execution, orchestration, environment setup, and results to provide engineers with fast, trustworthy feedback during development and continuous integration
  • Improve platform reliability, performance, observability, and cost efficiency by diagnosing recurring issues and implementing durable software and infrastructure improvements
  • Replace manual or fragmented developer workflows with reusable APIs, automation, and platform capabilities that simplify common development tasks
  • Use AI throughout software development and problem solving, and identify opportunities for AI-enabled workflows and capabilities that improve developer productivity across Upstart
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field (or its equivalent), plus 3 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Experience developing production software using one or more general-purpose programming languages
  • Experience designing, building, testing, and operating production software or infrastructure
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, continuous integration systems, developer tooling, or backend services
  • Experience independently delivering well-scoped software engineering projects from technical design through production operation
  • Demonstrated experience using AI assisted development tools across multiple stages of the software engineering lifecycle, with an interest in continuously evolving how you use these tools as their capabilities advance
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Kubernetes control-plane engineering, AWS, containers, or infrastructure as code
  • Knowledge of developer tooling, continuous integration systems, internal developer platforms, or shared test infrastructure
  • Experience building or operating ephemeral or production-like development and testing environments
  • Experience building APIs, services, command-line tools, test orchestration, or automation used by other engineers
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools across the software engineering lifecycle or building AI-enabled developer workflows and automation

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions' cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.
