Job description

Summary

Vital Services is seeking a talented and experienced Software Engineering Manager to join our growing Information Technology team. This is an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of, and play an integral role in, the expansion of our Software-as-a-Service team!

The core focus of the Software Engineering Manager will be to lead, mentor, and structurally organize engineering teams executing across multiple client-facing Time and Materials (T&M) work queues, maximizing billable resource utilization and project delivery velocity while protecting a 20% margin target.

Responsibilities of the Software Engineering Manager Include:

In our organization, success in this seat means own-and-deliver execution on these five core areas:

  • Queue Management & Resource Allocation: Directing, coaching, and managing a dedicated squad of Software Engineers and Web Developers, driving high individual execution and clear career paths.
  • Backlog Execution & Daily Monitoring: Actively monitoring active team sprint lines, triaging daily progress blockers, and protecting ticket velocity to ensure consistent team-level commitments are met.
  • Sprint Quality & Process Enforcement: Ensuring the squad adheres completely to centralized engineering standards (e.g., proper code review turnaround, automated unit testing, strict logging formats, and clean Jira documentation).
  • Delivery Triad Collaboration: Partnering seamlessly with the assigned Scrum Master and Project Manager to keep workflows optimized, scope managed, and technical dependencies flagged early.
  • Tactical Resource Allocation: Managing near-term team capacity details, ensuring developers remain highly allocated to high-priority, billable client or SaaS product streams.
Skills & Experience of the Software Engineering Manager Include:
  • Frontline Leadership Experience: 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 1-2 years operating as a Technical Lead, Scrum Lead, or frontline Engineering Manager running dedicated delivery squads.
  • Agile Project Coordination: Strong mastery of running backlog refinement, daily standups, and sprint tracking inside Jira and Confluence.
  • Technical Fluency: A robust software engineering backgroundfully capable of reading pull requests, guiding database logic conversations, and evaluating architectural patterns alongside the Lead Architect.
  • High Accountability Mindset: Comfortable translating corporate execution goals (like your overall billable benchmarks) into daily developer expectations, conducting performance check-ins, and driving professional accountability.
  • Problem-Solving Agility: Exceptional ability to jump into a live sprint queue, identify structural development friction, and pull in cross-team resources (like the Domain BA or Architect) to unblock execution instantly.
Success Metrics of the Software Engineering Manager:

To give you complete transparency, here are the numbers this role is accountable for keeping "in the green":

  • Squad Sprint Say/Do Ratio: Achieve and maintain a >= 80% collective sprint predictability ratio across their assigned team backlog.
  • Squad Bug Throughput Baseline: Enforce execution standards to keep team-generated bugs and internal regressions under < 5% of total completed sprint points.
  • Code Review SLA Compliance: Ensure the team maintains a rolling average of < 24 hours on open pull request reviews to eliminate pipeline friction.
  • Jira Tooling Hygiene: 100% team-wide daily compliance on time tracking, ticket comment updates, and precise story point estimations.
Compensation & Culture

Final compensation offer will be commensurate with experience and technical assessment results.

Hybrid Flexibility: We value our in-office culture, but offer a flexible hybrid schedule based on team project needs rather than a rigid "clock-in" or in-office requirement.

Growth Path: This position was opened due to new client projects and initiatives. As we provide white-glove MSP and SaaS services to our clients, this allows their businesses to grow and in turn allows us to grow. We invest in our employees and our client relationships, which has allowed us to continue to scale up and increase our capacity and growth trajectory.
