What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Engine Performance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Engine Performance Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or automotive engineering, with expertise in engine systems and performance analysis, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with diagnostic software, data acquisition tools, and simulation platforms such as MATLAB or AVL is typically required. Analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial for collaborating remotely and delivering actionable insights. These skills ensure accurate performance optimization and reliable support for engine operations in distributed work environments.

How does a Remote Engine Performance Engineer typically collaborate with on-site teams to optimize engine performance?

As a Remote Engine Performance Engineer, collaboration with on-site teams is crucial for effective diagnostics and optimization. This is usually achieved through regular virtual meetings, sharing real-time data, and utilizing collaborative platforms to review test results and performance metrics. Engineers often work closely with test technicians, design engineers, and project managers to analyze issues, recommend adjustments, and implement improvements. Clear communication and timely feedback are key to ensuring seamless coordination despite the physical distance.

What is a Remote Engine Performance Engineer?

A Remote Engine Performance Engineer is a professional who evaluates, monitors, and optimizes the performance of engines (such as those in automobiles, aircraft, or industrial equipment) from a remote location. They use specialized software and data analysis tools to assess engine efficiency, diagnose issues, and recommend improvements without being physically present with the machinery. This role often involves collaborating with on-site engineers, interpreting telemetry data, and providing guidance to enhance engine reliability and output. Remote Engine Performance Engineers are employed in industries like automotive, aerospace, and energy, where remote diagnostics and performance optimization are crucial.

Job description

Industry: Financial Services
Location: 100% Remote
Contract: 90 Day Contract-to-Hire
Rate: Up to $65/hr

Top 3 Technical Skills
โ€ข Performance testing (load, stress, soak) with tools like Artillery, K6, JMeter
โ€ข Automation frameworks (Selenium, Playwright, TestNG/JUnit)
โ€ข Building performance test environments from scratch

About the Role
Weโ€™re looking for a Senior Quality Engineer who knows how to build performance testing environments from the ground up and drive performance strategy across complex, high-traffic systems. This role isnโ€™t about maintaining the status quoโ€”itโ€™s about owning performance from design to delivery. Youโ€™ll shape testing approaches, lead automation, and influence engineering decisions that directly impact scalability, reliability, and user experience.

Youโ€™ll work closely with Engineering, Product, and Ops to ensure performance isn't an afterthoughtโ€”itโ€™s built into the lifecycle. If youโ€™re the person who digs into metrics, calls out architectural risks early, and knows how to turn performance findings into business clarity, youโ€™ll thrive here.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Assurance Strategy & Execution
โ€ข Develop and execute performance testing strategies that ensure scalable, stable delivery.
โ€ข Build and maintain automated test scripts using open-source frameworks.
โ€ข Apply version control best practices for test automation code.
โ€ข Define and reinforce QA standards for planning, execution, and automation.

Performance Testing & Optimization
โ€ข Lead performance benchmarking, tuning, and performance environment management.
โ€ข Use tools such as Artillery, K6, Locus, JMeter, or LoadRunner to measure, analyze, and optimize.
โ€ข Identify and mitigate risks, bottlenecks, and architectural limitations.
โ€ข Translate performance metrics into clear insights and recommendations.

Automation & Continuous Improvement
โ€ข Build and maintain automation frameworks and test suites.
โ€ข Integrate performance testing into CI/CD workflows.
โ€ข Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions.
โ€ข Stay current with QA, automation, and performance engineering trends.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
โ€ข Partner with Product, Development, and Operations to align performance priorities with business needs.
โ€ข Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and technical discussions.
โ€ข Lead cross-team initiatives to improve quality processes, tools, and methodologies.

Success Metrics
โ€ข Performance environment built, validated, and integrated into delivery workflows.
โ€ข Clear benchmarking baselines established and maintained.
โ€ข Reduction in performance-related defects and incidents.
โ€ข Increased test automation coverage and stability across CI/CD.
โ€ข Measurable improvements in system scalability and reliability over time.

Who You Are
โ€ข 5โ€“7 years in QA, performance testing, and automation.
โ€ข Experience standing up new performance environments from scratch.
โ€ข Skilled in load, stress, and soak testing methodologies.
โ€ข Strong communicator able to convert technical metrics into business impact.
โ€ข Knowledge of Agile frameworks such as Scrum or Kanban.
โ€ข Comfortable working across engineering, product, and operations.
โ€ข Focused, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering reliable, high-quality software.

Tools & Technologies
Performance Testing: Artillery, K6, JMeter, LoadRunner
Automation: Selenium, Playwright, JUnit, TestNG
DevOps & Infra: Azure DevOps, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes
Databases/Messaging: MS SQL Server, MongoDB, RabbitMQ
Monitoring: Datadog, Freshservice
