Remote Energy Efficiency Program information

What is a remote energy efficiency program?

Remote energy efficiency programs are initiatives designed to help individuals, businesses, or organizations improve their energy use without requiring in-person visits. Instead, these programs use digital tools, phone consultations, and online resources to assess energy consumption, provide recommendations, and support the implementation of energy-saving measures. Common services include virtual energy audits, remote monitoring, and guidance on upgrading appliances or building systems to be more efficient. These programs are especially useful for reaching participants in remote areas or during times when in-person interactions are limited.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote energy efficiency program manager?

To thrive as a Remote Energy Efficiency Program Manager, you need expertise in energy management, program administration, and a relevant degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with energy modeling software, data analysis tools, and industry certifications such as CEM (Certified Energy Manager) are typically required. Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills help you lead teams and engage stakeholders effectively. These capabilities are essential for designing impactful programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and achieving measurable energy savings remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote energy efficiency program roles, and how can they overcome them?

One common challenge in remote energy efficiency program roles is maintaining clear communication with both internal teams and external stakeholders, as much of the collaboration happens virtually. Additionally, managing projects across different locations and time zones can require strong organizational skills and proactive scheduling. To overcome these challenges, professionals often leverage project management software, set regular check-ins, and establish clear documentation practices. Building strong relationships with local partners and staying updated on regional energy regulations can also help ensure program success.

What is the difference between Remote Energy Efficiency Program and Remote Energy Auditor?

AspectRemote Energy Efficiency ProgramRemote Energy Auditor
CredentialsCertifications in energy management, sustainability, or related fieldsCertifications like BPI, RESNET, or similar energy auditing credentials
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote, coordinating with clients and teams onlineRemote or on-site assessments, with some remote analysis
Industry UsageDeveloping and managing energy efficiency programs for clientsInspecting and evaluating energy systems to identify savings opportunities

The Remote Energy Efficiency Program focuses on designing and managing energy-saving initiatives remotely, while the Remote Energy Auditor conducts assessments to identify energy inefficiencies. Both roles require relevant certifications and often operate in remote settings, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

The successful candidate will provide expertise in electricity and natural gas end-use systems, energy-savings analysis, measurement and verification, and the development of technical methodologies and tools.

This position may be performed remotely from any US state or Ontario, Canada. The role requires up to 20% travel to project sites across Canada and United States.

Resource Innovations (RI) is a women-led energy transformation firm focused on impact. Building on our expertise in energy efficiency, we're constantly expanding our portfolio of clean energy solutions to guide utilities through increasingly complex, connected challenges. Load flexibility. Electrification. Carbon reduction. With every step, we're leading the charge to power change.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop technical algorithms, calculation tools, data-collection instruments, and work papers to support program design, evaluation, and savings estimation.
  • Develop scopes of work, technical approaches, project plans, and budgets for energy-efficiency studies and utility program support.
  • Perform and review energy-savings analyses for commercial and industrial systems, including HVAC, building controls, lighting, refrigeration, compressed air, building envelope, and natural gas end uses.
  • Provide technical expertise in natural gas technologies, including space and water heating, boilers, furnaces, process heating, steam systems, and other gas-fired equipment.
  • Lead measurement and verification activities using engineering calculations, utility billing analysis, regression modeling, and energy simulation.
  • Use Python, spreadsheets, and analytical tools to clean, process, analyze, automate, and visualize energy and program data.
  • Research emerging energy-efficiency technologies and develop scoping-level savings calculations.
  • Review technical calculations, evaluation reports, and deliverables for accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Lead and contribute to technical reports, presentations, white papers, and proposals for utility clients and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a directly related field with at least four years of relevant experience; or a master's degree in a related field with at least three years of relevant experience.
  • Experience developing and reviewing energy-savings calculations for commercial and industrial systems, including natural gas end uses.
  • Experience managing technical projects, including scopes, budgets, schedules, staff assignments, and client deliverables.
  • Experience using Python and/or Excel for data cleaning, statistical analysis, regression modeling, automation, and data visualization.
  • Experience conducting measurement and verification using engineering calculations, utility billing analysis, interval data, or regression modeling.
  • Interest in sustainability and passionate about making a meaningful impact on the environment.

Preferred skills, education and experience

  • Experience with natural gas technologies, including boilers, furnaces, water heating, process heating, steam systems, and building controls.
  • Experience reviewing technical resource manuals and applying ASHRAE standards, CSA standards, and energy-efficiency program requirements.
  • Experience reviewing third-party program evaluation reports and assessing reported savings, methodologies, assumptions, and incentive calculations.
  • Experience conducting field inspections of HVAC, natural gas equipment, building automation systems, and controls.
