How much do remote electric propulsion jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote electric propulsion in the United States is $102,825.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $82,500.00 and $118,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is remote electric propulsion?

Remote electric propulsion refers to the use of electrically-powered systems to provide thrust or movement, often in aerospace applications such as satellites, spacecraft, or unmanned vehicles. Unlike traditional propulsion systems that rely on chemical fuels, electric propulsion uses electrical energy to accelerate propellants or generate force. This technology enables higher efficiency, longer operational lifespans, and the ability to perform precise maneuvers in space or remote environments. It is increasingly used for deep space missions, satellite station-keeping, and other advanced aerospace projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Electric Propulsion Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Electric Propulsion Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, propulsion systems, and physics, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with simulation tools (such as MATLAB or ANSYS), electric propulsion test equipment, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications like those from NASA or ESA are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective remote communication, and teamwork skills set candidates apart in collaborative, distributed environments. These competencies ensure the successful design, analysis, and support of advanced propulsion systems, critical for mission reliability and innovation.

What are some common challenges faced by remote electric propulsion engineers when collaborating with a distributed team?

Remote electric propulsion engineers often work with colleagues across different time zones and disciplines, which can make real-time communication and troubleshooting more complex. Coordinating system integration, sharing test results, and aligning on design updates require clear documentation and regular virtual meetings. Utilizing collaborative engineering tools and maintaining proactive communication are essential to ensure project milestones are met efficiently. Adapting to these remote workflows can enhance flexibility but may also require extra effort to stay connected with the broader team.

What is the difference between Remote Electric Propulsion vs Remote Electric Propulsion Technician?

AspectRemote Electric PropulsionRemote Electric Propulsion Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree or related certificationTechnical certification or diploma in electrical or propulsion systems
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing in labs or officesInstallation, maintenance, and troubleshooting in field or lab settings
Employer & IndustryAerospace, space agencies, or research institutionsManufacturers, aerospace companies, or maintenance providers
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on engineering roles and design workFocus on hands-on technical and maintenance roles

Remote Electric Propulsion typically refers to engineering and design roles involving the development of electric propulsion systems. In contrast, Remote Electric Propulsion Technician focuses on the hands-on installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of these systems. Both roles are essential in the aerospace industry but differ in responsibilities, required credentials, and work environments.

Position Summary:
Revolution Space is looking for a dynamic and growth-oriented Principal Systems Engineer - Electric Propulsion with a mechanical background to contribute to the full life cycle development of our in-space electric propulsion products from requirements development through deployed operations support. This engineer is expected to integrate with the existing technical team to:
  • Interface with stakeholders to develop product requirements accounting for allocation flow-down and capability flow-up to enabling robust product development and verification in support of a variety of spacecraft and in-space use cases
  • Lead multidisciplinary technical teams for product development and characterization leading to well defined and documented systems and capabilities
  • Develop and maintain key technical documentation (e.g. interface definitions, theory of operations, etc.)
  • Serve as key interface to horizontally integrated detailed-design teams consisting of specialized skillsets
  • Serve as the interface to program or project management (e.g. development and maintenance of salient schedule milestones)
  • Plan, evaluate & document test product and/or component campaigns for space and application suitability in conjunction with the Revolution Space test engineering team
  • In conjunction with our production and configuration management teams, prepare appropriate documentation to enable development & engineering level builds through initial low rate production

The ideal candidate will have experience in a fast paced, multi-disciplinary environment and exposure to multiple program phases from concept to deployment. As a system engineer, the ideal candidate will have broad knowledge of space system engineering practices and depth in select disciplines such as: propulsion systems, fluidics, mechanical engineering and/or electrical engineering.
The position is full-time remote and available to be filled immediately.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsibility for the overall system architecture, including components and interfaces
  • Support integration of Revolution Space's thrusters onto a spacecraft.
  • Meet program or project objectives
  • Support technical business development activities.
