Communications Specialist
The Communications Associate is responsible for the full spectrum of organizational communications for the National Veteran Small Business Coalition (NVSBC) and NVSBC Education Foundation. This role serves as the communications engine of the organization managing the public voice, editorial output, digital presence, and a robust calendar of events. The Communications Associate ensures that every program, initiative, and event is communicated consistently, compellingly, and on time to all internal and external audiences.
The Communications Associate reports to the Chief Development & Marketing Officer (CDMO) and works cross-functionally with program, membership, and leadership teams. This is a full-time, remote-eligible position with significant external-facing responsibilities.

PRIMARY FOCUS AREAS
This role encompasses four core functional areas, each critical to NVSBCs external presence and organizational effectiveness:
Organizational Communications
- Serve as the primary communications voice for NVSBC across all external and internal channels, ensuring consistent messaging, tone, and brand standards.
- Draft, edit, and distribute organizational announcements, leadership communications, program updates, policy statements, and stakeholder correspondence.
- Maintain a master organizational communications calendar, coordinating messaging across all programs, campaigns, and events.
- Support the Development Director with donor communications, stewardship materials, sponsor acknowledgments, and fundraising collateral.
Events Communication Management
- Communicate NVSBCs full events calendar, translating organizational programming into timely, multi-channel external communications for each event.
- Execute multi-channel communications plans for each event, including save-the-dates, promotional campaigns, registration and sponsorship announcements, reminders, and post-event follow-up.
- Lead sponsorship recruitment communications, including prospectus distribution and recognition fulfillment.
- Support Development Director in sponsorship engagement, tracking, and after-action communications.
- Assist Development Director in creating robust and consistent internal documentation processes for grant management, donor and sponsor communications, and important deadlines and/or timelines for each.
Digital & Social Media
- Manage NVSBCs social media presence primarily LinkedIn and YouTube with a consistent cadence of content that reflects organizational priorities and event activity.
- Create and schedule social media content that promotes events, amplifies thought leadership, highlights member and partner achievements, and advances NVSBCs mission.
- Support digital marketing campaigns in coordination with the marketing consultant to drive event registrations, sponsorship inquiries, and brand awareness.
- Monitor digital engagement across platforms, responding to comments and messages in a timely and professional manner.
- Track and report on social media and digital campaign performance metrics on a regular basis.
- Explore the establishment and management of NVSBC's presence on X (formerly Twitter) and/or other relevant social media platforms, with the potential to develop a consistent content cadence focused on event promotion, timely information sharing, and expanded organizational reach.
Publications & Content Development
- Lead content production for NVSBC publications including monthly First Call newsletters; assist Development Director in producing Annual Reports.
- Recruit and manage thought leadership contributions from subject matter experts, member organizations, government partners, and industry leaders.
- Manage editorial workflows, contributor relationships, and publication schedules to ensure timely, high-quality output.
- Collect and manage the distribution of all requisite sponsor advertisements assets.
- Maintain and update website content (back-end edits, content uploads, and metrics monitoring) in keeping with brand standards and organizational voice.
- Develop and maintain a content library of organizational assets, templates, boilerplate copy, and reusable communications materials.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate cross-functionally with program, membership, and development teams to ensure communications are aligned with organizational goals.
- Represent NVSBC at conferences and events as needed, providing communications support including pre-event promotion, on-site social media coverage, and post-event recap content.
- Maintain and update media contact lists, sponsor databases, and editorial documentation.
- Contribute to broader organizational planning and strategy discussions related to communications and external affairs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Event Management, or a related field.[*]
- Minimum 23 years of professional experience in organizational communications, events communications, or a closely related role.
- Demonstrated writing, editing, and storytelling ability across digital and print formats, with a portfolio or writing samples preferred.
- Experience developing and distributing event communications across multiple channels in a professional setting.
- Experience managing social media accounts in a professional or organizational capacity (LinkedIn required).
- Proficiency with email marketing platforms (MemberClicks, Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or equivalent).
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a high volume of concurrent deadlines.
- Collaborative, proactive, and comfortable operating in a lean, fast-paced nonprofit environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting or coordinating events with sponsorship components, including sponsor communications.
- Familiarity with the veteran business, military, federal contracting, or small business advocacy community.
- Knowledge of government contracting programs (8(a), HUBZone, SDVOSB, SBA programs).
- Experience with event registration platforms (Eventbrite, MemberClicks Events, or equivalent).
- Experience with basic graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Express, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of website content management systems (WordPress or equivalent).
- Experience with digital analytics tools (Google Analytics, LinkedIn Analytics, or equivalent).
- Veteran or military-connected background.
- 5+ years of professional experience.
- Advanced degree in a relevant field.
