About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team: Compass's portfolio of housing programs empowers unhoused and housing-insecure San Francisco families to find and keep safe, stable, affordable housing. Families receive help with housing search, money for move-in costs, ongoing rental subsidies, and case management designed to set families up for long term housing stability.

Salary: $135,000 - $145,000

Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday

Reports to: Chief Programs Officer

Location: 1061 Market St, San Francisco. Fully on-site (not hybrid or remote).

Position Description:
The Senior Director of Housing Programs guides five program teams and supports 40+ staff working across scattered-site and site-based housing and eviction prevention programs. They supervise 5 Program Directors, coordinate strategy across teams, and work closely with our funders and the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) to shape programs and policy for homeless families in San Francisco.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Ensure that Compass housing programs provide highly effective, trauma-informed services enabling families to move from homelessness to stability.
  • Identify opportunities for programs to streamline and align services.
  • Provide direct supervision and ongoing support to the Program Directors of Compass' rapid rehousing, eviction prevention, housing location, scattered site permanent supportive housing, and site-based permanent supportive housing programs.
  • Represent Compass' housing programs externally in the community. Partner with Compass' Public Policy + External Affairs team to identify opportunities for advocacy.
  • Build strong relationships with funders. Ensure that contractual obligations are met or exceeded, that funds are spent effectively, and that outcomes are conveyed successfully. Work with the Development team to identify and apply for additional funding to expand and improve our work.
  • Work with the Impact + Learning team to use data to inform our housing efforts, diving deeply into what's working, what's not, and how staff across the agency can better target our efforts to improve family outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Compass Behavioral Health Services to ensure that services are delivered from a trauma-informed perspective and that all staff receive robust clinical training and support.
  • Work with the Training Director and People Strategy teams to ensure that services are imbued with an inclusive, equitable and anti-racist perspective.
  • Step in when appropriate to provide crisis intervention and direct client care in challenging situations.

Qualifications:

  • Required: at least 3 years of experience in staff supervision, including direct and indirect reports. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, coach, and mentor.
  • Required: at least 3 years of experience developing and managing nonprofit programs for low-income, housing-insecure, or homeless individuals.
  • Required: at least 3 years of experience managing complex budgets and government contracts. (Experience with subsidy programs preferred.)
  • Required: Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency
  • Fluency in Spanish desired, but not required.
  • Experience supporting individuals in crisis and with trauma-informed care.
    • Strong communication, advocacy, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    • Deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging throughout a complex and dynamic organization.
    • Degree in social work, non-profit administration/management or related field encouraged but not required, or a combination of equivalent educational and lived experience.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required; Salesforce experience a plus.
    • Real estate experience a plus.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    • Salary range: $135,000 - 145,000 per year.
    • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation in your first year, 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave, and time off for education.
    • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
    • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-6.
