Job description

Business Physical & Operational Security Auditor

Full Time | Remote / Field-Based | Approximately 50% Travel

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Business Physical & Operational Security Auditor to conduct independent physical security, operational, compliance, and risk-based audits within the secure logistics industry.

This is a full-time, field-based position requiring travel approximately every other week. The role is particularly well suited for an experienced or retired professional seeking meaningful part-time work while applying a background in security, logistics, operations, risk management, law enforcement, auditing, or related disciplines.

The Auditor will evaluate physical security controls, operational processes, asset accountability, employee practices, and compliance with established company policies and procedures. The position requires a highly observant, independent professional who is comfortable working in secure facilities, reviewing sensitive operational processes, interviewing employees and management, documenting deficiencies, and preparing clear, fact-based audit reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct scheduled and, when required, unannounced physical and operational security audits at secure logistics facilities and related operating locations.
  • Evaluate compliance with company policies, standard operating procedures, physical security requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Assess the effectiveness of physical security controls, including:
  • Facility access controls
  • Vaults and secure storage areas
  • Electronic and mechanical locking systems
  • Alarm and intrusion detection systems
  • CCTV and video surveillance
  • Key and access-device control
  • Employee and visitor access procedures
  • Opening and closing procedures
  • Dual-control and segregation-of-duties requirements
  • Observe and evaluate secure logistics activities involving the receipt, custody, storage, processing, preparation, transfer, and transportation of valuables.
  • Review operational practices involving armored vehicles, route activities, liability transfers, chain of custody, high-value shipments, and secure storage.
  • Perform physical inventory observations, counts, reconciliations, and asset-verification procedures when required.
  • Evaluate adherence to internal controls designed to prevent theft, loss, fraud, unauthorized access, operational error, and security incidents.
  • Review records, logs, reports, video evidence, inventory documents, access-control records, and other supporting documentation.
  • Interview branch management, supervisors, security personnel, drivers, messengers, vault personnel, and other employees as appropriate.
  • Identify and document control weaknesses, policy violations, operational deficiencies, and physical security vulnerabilities.
  • Distinguish between isolated procedural errors and systemic control deficiencies.
  • Assess the potential operational, financial, security, and reputational impact of identified findings.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and fact-based written audit findings supported by appropriate evidence.
  • Communicate audit results professionally to site management and company leadership.
  • Conduct audit debriefings and explain findings, risks, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Work collaboratively with field leadership to develop practical remediation measures for identified deficiencies.
  • Perform follow-up reviews to determine whether corrective actions have been completed and are operating effectively.
  • Maintain organized and confidential audit documentation, photographs, supporting records, and workpapers.
  • Identify trends and recurring deficiencies and communicate opportunities for broader operational improvement.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding company security procedures, vulnerabilities, customer information, investigations, and proprietary operating practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Criminal Justice, Security Management, Risk Management, or another closely related field.
  • Professional experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Secure logistics
  • Armored transportation
  • Physical security
  • Corporate security
  • Operational auditing
  • Loss prevention
  • Risk management
  • Compliance
  • Law enforcement
  • Military security operations
  • Transportation or logistics operations
  • Strong understanding of physical security principles, internal controls, risk assessment, and operational compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to objectively observe operations and identify weaknesses in processes and controls.
  • Strong analytical and investigative skills.
  • Excellent written communication and professional report-writing skills.
  • Ability to document findings in a factual, concise, and defensible manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to professionally communicate findings to employees, supervisors, and senior management.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize inconsistencies in records, physical inventories, security practices, and employee procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with limited day-to-day supervision.
  • Sound professional judgment and discretion when handling confidential or security-sensitive information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and common business applications.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to rent and operate a vehicle while traveling.
  • Ability to successfully complete applicable background screening requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with experience in:

  • Cash-in-transit or armored transportation
  • Cash and valuables management
  • Secure warehousing or vault operations
  • Banking or financial-services security
  • Corporate security auditing
  • Physical security assessments
  • Internal audit or operational compliance
  • Inventory reconciliation and high-value asset control
  • CCTV and video review
  • Security investigations
  • Transportation safety and fleet compliance
  • Development of corrective-action and remediation plans

Professional certifications such as CPP, PSP, PCI, CFE, CIA, CISA, or similar audit, security, fraud, or risk-management credentials are beneficial but are not required.

Travel Requirements

This position requires regular overnight travel, generally every other week, depending upon the audit schedule.

Typical assignments may require:

  • Air and automobile travel within the United States
  • Approximately two to four consecutive days of travel per assignment
  • Hotel stays near audit locations
  • Early-morning or evening observations when necessary to evaluate opening, closing, dispatch, route, vault, or other security-sensitive operations

The successful candidate must be comfortable traveling independently and managing an assigned audit schedule.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time professional position structured around scheduled field audits and associated reporting.

Audit weeks may involve concentrated fieldwork and travel, followed by non-travel periods for report preparation, administrative work, follow-up, or time away from work.

The position may be particularly attractive to an experienced or retired professional who wishes to remain professionally active without returning to a traditional full-time schedule.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a mature, experienced professional who understands that effective security auditing involves more than completing a checklist.

You should be comfortable entering an unfamiliar operation, independently evaluating what is actually occurring, comparing observed practices with established requirements, identifying meaningful risk, and documenting your conclusions objectively.

Successful candidates will demonstrate professional curiosity, sound judgment, integrity, discretion, and the confidence to identify deficiencies while maintaining constructive relationships with local management and employees.

This position is well suited for a retired or semi-retired professional with substantial experience in secure logistics, corporate security, law enforcement, military operations, transportation, auditing, risk management, or operational leadership who is interested in continuing to contribute those skills on a part-time basis.

Physical Requirements

The position may require the ability to:

  • Walk through operational, warehouse, garage, vault, and secure-storage environments.
  • Stand for extended periods while observing operations.
  • Navigate stairs and industrial work areas.
  • Inspect vehicles, secure rooms, doors, locks, cameras, and other security infrastructure.
  • Work during early-morning or evening operating periods when necessary.
  • Travel independently with normal business luggage and audit equipment.

Reasonable accommodations will be considered consistent with applicable law.

Core Competencies

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

Integrity and Independence — Maintains objectivity and professional independence when evaluating operations.

Observation and Attention to Detail — Recognizes subtle control weaknesses, inconsistencies, and departures from established procedures.

Risk-Based Thinking — Focuses audit attention on conditions presenting meaningful security, financial, safety, or operational exposure.

Confidentiality — Protects sensitive security, customer, employee, operational, and investigative information at all times.
