About Water at Work Ministry

Water at Work Ministry provides safe drinking water to underserved communities and the rural poor of the Dominican Republic. Water plants we establish provide the resources our local ministry partners need to carry out their work of spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ through word and deed.

With an annual operating budget of approximately $1 million, Water at Work is entering an exciting new season of growth and development capacity building.

Position Summary

Water at Work Ministry seeks a relational, strategic, and mission-driven Director of Development & Communications to lead and grow the organization’s fundraising efforts.

This role is ideal for a fundraiser who enjoys both relationship-based fundraising and hands-on execution in a collaborative small nonprofit environment. The Director of Development & Communications will steward existing donor relationships, expand fundraising systems and strategy, support donor communications, and help strengthen long-term revenue sustainability.

This is the organization’s second full-time U.S.-based employee and represents an important investment in fundraising growth and donor engagement.

The Director of Development & Communications will work closely with the Executive Director, board members, and a highly engaged former Executive Director who remains active in donor stewardship and relationship management.

Key Responsibilities

Individual Giving & Major Donor Development (35%)

  • Manage and grow relationships with individual donors and major gift prospects
  • Conduct donor outreach, cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation activities
  • Partner with the Executive Director and board members on donor strategy and major gift conversations
  • Maintain thoughtful donor engagement and follow-up practices

Events & Donor Engagement (25%)

  • Lead planning and execution of fundraising and donor engagement events
  • Coordinate volunteers, vendors, and contract support as needed
  • Ensure events support broader donor relationship goals and organizational visibility

Marketing & Communications (20%)

  • Oversee donor-facing communications including appeals, newsletters, email campaigns, and impact storytelling
  • Supervise social media execution carried out by Dominican Republic-based staff
  • Collaborate with contractors supporting design, marketing, or communications projects
  • Help strengthen the organization’s overall fundraising communications strategy

Fundraising Systems & Operations (10%)

  • Help maintain and strengthen donor systems within Bloomerang CRM
  • Support gift processing, acknowledgments, donor tracking, and reporting in collaboration with volunteers and leadership
  • Improve fundraising processes and reporting visibility

Grants & Campaign Support (10%)

  • Research and pursue foundation and grant opportunities
  • Strengthen grant tracking and reporting systems
  • Support annual campaigns and monthly giving growth initiatives

Organizational Support & Structure

Water at Work operates with a collaborative and highly mission-driven culture. This role will not be solely responsible for fundraising success independently.

The Director of Development & Communications will be supported by:

  • An active fundraising Executive Director
  • Engaged board leadership
  • A former Executive Director with longstanding donor relationships
  • Dedicated volunteer supporting CRM and operational processes
  • Contract marketing and communications support when needed

This role will be expected to engage and equip board members to participate in fundraising as mission ambassadors, providing upskilling training, simple tools, and joint donor engagement opportunities aligned with their strengths.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will bring:

  • Approximately 5-7 years of nonprofit fundraising experience
  • Alignment with the Christian faith-based mission of the organization
  • Comfort operating strategically and tactically in a small organization
  • Demonstrated success in individual giving and donor relationship management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with donor databases/CRMs (Bloomerang preferred)
  • Ability to travel to the Dominican Republic at least once per year

Helpful but not required:

  • Grant writing experience
  • Event fundraising experience
  • CFRE credential

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $80,000
  • Fully remote position based in metro Atlanta, Georgia
  • Health insurance
  • Three weeks PTO plus U.S. holidays + Good Friday
  • Opportunity to help shape and grow a mission-centered fundraising program

What Success Looks Like in Year One

  • Support growth toward a $1.2M annual fundraising goal
  • Deepen relationships with existing donors while identifying new prospects
  • Improve consistency and effectiveness of donor communications
  • Strengthen monthly giving and donor engagement systems
  • Expand visibility into grant opportunities and pipeline management
