Job description

Overview
The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.
At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org
CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.
Position Overview:
Leveraging deep expertise in strengthening healthcare systems, CHAI has launched an ambitious Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative that responsibly harnesses AI to radically enhance health delivery, improve patient and provider experiences, and achieve significant cost and efficiency gains in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). AI promises a significant leap in diagnostics, treatment optimization, patient engagement, and health systems efficiency. CHAI's AI initiative seeks to systematically capture and scale these benefits, delivering meaningful, sustainable health impacts at scale.
CHAI is seeking an Associate Director to lead its AI Programs portfolio, responsible for integrating AI across CHAI's diverse programmatic areas including Maternal and Child Health, HIV/TB, Cancer, Malaria, NCDs, Health Financing, Health Workforce, and others. Reporting to the Senior Director, AI, the Associate Director will work closely with CHAI country teams, global program teams, and government partners to identify high-impact opportunities for AI and guide projects from conception through to measurable impact.
The Associate Director will split their time between internal AI transformation (25-35%)-enabling efficiency improvements for CHAI program teams through integration of AI tools into day-to-day workflows-and external AI transformation (65-75%), supporting CHAI country teams and government partners to design, implement, and scale AI-enabled solutions. The individual will provide senior advisory services across a portfolio of AI projects integrated into CHAI's core programmatic work, serving as a trusted resource for CHAI country teams, global teams, and partner organizations navigating AI adoption.
In addition to high-level advisory work, the Associate Director will build and lead a team of Associates and Managers who provide day-to-day AI project guidance and implementation support. This role requires close collaboration with the Associate Director, Clinical AI and other members of CHAI's AI team to ensure a coordinated approach across the organization's AI initiatives.
We are seeking a candidate with strong leadership experience guiding AI projects from conception to impact, ideally in a strategy or technology consulting capacity. The ideal candidate combines deep familiarity with AI capabilities and implementation approaches with excellent relationship management and advisory skills. The role requires periods of intensive travel (50%+ during critical project phases), with overall travel averaging 10-25% annually.
This position is flexible to being based in the United States or in a CHAI program country (subject to country leadership approval and ability to obtain work authorization). This position can be levelled at Associate Director or Director depending on level of experience
Responsibilities
  • Lead CHAI's AI Programs portfolio, defining strategy and priorities for AI integration across CHAI's global programmatic areas
  • Provide senior advisory services to CHAI country teams, global program teams, and government partners on AI project design, implementation, and scale-up
  • Drive internal AI transformation efforts (25-35% of time), enabling CHAI program teams to improve efficiency and effectiveness through integration of AI tools into day-to-day workflows
  • Lead external AI transformation work (65-75% of time), partnering with CHAI teams and government counterparts to design, implement, and scale AI pilots with strong government ownership
  • Build and manage a team of Associates and Managers who provide day-to-day AI project guidance and implementation support
  • Collaborate closely with the Associate Director, Clinical AI and other AI team members to ensure coordination across CHAI's AI initiatives
  • Develop frameworks, tools, and resources that enable CHAI teams to effectively identify, scope, and execute AI projects
  • Represent CHAI externally on AI topics and support fundraising efforts, including proposal development and donor engagement
  • Travel internationally during intensive project periods (50%+), with overall travel averaging 10-25% annually
  • Undertake other responsibilities as needed at the request of the Senior Director, AI or senior leadership

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least 10 years of relevant professional experience
  • Entrepreneurial mindset motivated by ambitious goal to improve health outcomes for over 1 billion people through AI-enabled programs
  • Strong leadership experience guiding AI projects from conception through to measurable impact, ideally in a strategy or technology consulting capacity
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI and familiarity with the current landscape of AI tools, capabilities, and implementation approaches
  • Track record of managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects and providing advisory services to senior stakeholders across diverse programmatic areas
  • Strong technical translation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively between technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience building and managing teams, with demonstrated ability to mentor and develop staff
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to represent an organization externally
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive initiatives with limited structure
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally, including intensive periods (50%+) during project launches, averaging 10-25% overall

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with governments, multilateral organizations, and/or in LMIC health settings
  • Background in global health, public health, or health systems strengthening
  • Experience in strategy consulting, technology consulting, or similar advisory roles
  • Background in digital health, health informatics, or health technology implementation
  • Proficiency in languages spoken in CHAI program countries (Hindi, French, Swahili, etc.)
