What does a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer do?

A Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing digital hardware components and systems, such as circuit boards and embedded devices, from a remote location. They use specialized software to create schematics and layouts, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure that hardware designs meet required specifications and standards. Their work often includes simulation, prototyping, and troubleshooting to optimize performance and reliability. Working remotely, they rely heavily on digital communication tools to coordinate with other engineers and stakeholders throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer, you need a solid background in digital circuit design, experience with hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, and a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with CAD tools such as Altium Designer, FPGA development boards, and simulation software is typically required, along with relevant certifications like Xilinx or Altera. Strong problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for collaborating remotely and managing complex projects independently. These skills and qualities are critical to delivering reliable, innovative hardware solutions efficiently while working in distributed teams.

How does a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development process?

As a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teams such as firmware, software, and testing is usually achieved through virtual meetings, shared design tools, and project management platforms. Regular design reviews, documentation updates, and version control systems help ensure everyone stays aligned despite working from different locations. Strong communication skills and proactive outreach are essential, as you'll often need to clarify requirements, address technical challenges, and integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders. This remote structure allows for flexibility but requires discipline in managing tasks and maintaining clear, consistent communication.

What is the difference between Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer vs Remote Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Digital Hardware Design EngineerRemote Embedded Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; certifications in FPGA or ASIC designBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related; certifications in embedded systems or RTOS
Work EnvironmentDesigning digital circuits, FPGA/ASIC development, hardware testingDeveloping embedded software, hardware integration, firmware testing
Industry UsageSemiconductors, consumer electronics, telecommunicationsAutomotive, IoT devices, industrial automation

The main difference is that Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineers focus on creating and testing digital hardware components like FPGA and ASICs, while Remote Embedded Systems Engineers develop software and firmware for embedded hardware systems. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in their primary focus on hardware design versus embedded software development.

Job description

Team Red Dog is hiring a Senior Hardware Design Verification Engineer for our client, a leading cloud and software provider and world-class innovation client. In this fully remote role, you will drive hardware design verification for next-generation accelerated networking technologies by developing comprehensive verification strategies, executing SystemVerilog/UVM test environments, and validating complex hardware features through coverage-driven methodologies. You'll collaborate closely with hardware and software engineering teams to identify critical design issues, improve verification quality, and help deliver networking innovations that power one of the world's largest cloud infrastructures. This opportunity is ideal for experienced verification engineers who thrive in complex hardware environments and enjoy solving challenging design validation problems with automation, testing, and continuous integration.

Top Required Skills (Must Haves):

  1. Hardware Design Verification (10+ years) – Extensive experience developing andexecuting verification strategies for complex digital hardware designs, including verification planning, debugging, regression analysis, and coverage closure.
  2. SystemVerilog & UVM (10+ years) – Expert-level experience building and enhancing UVM-based verification environments, writing sequences, constraints, assertions, functional coverage, and reusable verification components.
  3. RTL Design Understanding – Strong knowledge of RTL architecture and digital logic with the ability to debug hardware behavior and collaborate effectively with design engineers.
  4. Verification Methodologies & Automation – Experience with coverage-driven verification, regression automation, scripting, continuous integration, Agile development practices, and verification metrics.

Opportunity Overview:

Join an engineering team responsible for validating the accelerated networking hardware that powers Azure's next-generation cloud infrastructure. You'll contribute to verification efforts supporting one of the world's largest deployments of FPGA-based SmartNIC technology, helping ensure new networking features are thoroughly validated before production. This role offers the opportunity to work on high-performance networking technologies including Software-Defined Networking (SDN), RDMA, network virtualization, and advanced packet processing while collaborating with experienced hardware and software engineers.

How you will make an impact:

  • Develop comprehensive verification plans for new hardware features in collaboration with hardware and software design teams.
  • Execute verification plans by creating directed, constrained-random, and stress test cases within an existing SystemVerilog/UVM environment.
  • Enhance verification environments by developing reusable sequences, assertions, scoreboards, checkers, constraints, and functional coverage.
  • Drive verification closure using functional, code, assertion, and test plan coverage metrics.
  • Debug complex hardware and integration issues, perform root-cause analysis, and partner with design teams to resolve defects.
  • Build automation scripts supporting continuous integration and continuous development (CI/CD) verification workflows.
  • Participate in Agile development activities including sprint planning, code reviews, and iterative feature delivery.
  • Improve overall verification quality through congestion, error injection, recovery, and corner-case testing scenarios.

The expertise you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of professional hardware design verification experience.
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience with SystemVerilog.
  • 10+ years of experience using Universal Verification Methodology (UVM).
  • Strong understanding of RTL design and digital hardware architecture.
  • Experience creating verification plans, developing testbenches, and achieving coverage closure.
  • Experience debugging complex hardware verification issues and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Experience with verification methodologies, regression automation, and scripting.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development and CI/CD environments.
  • Ability to work independently while ramping quickly within an established verification environment.
  • Ability to support Pacific Time working hours while working remotely within the United States.
  • Availability to commit to the full one-year engagement.

What makes a candidate highly successful in this role:
Candidates who excel in this position demonstrate deep technical expertise in hardware verification rather than general testing experience. They can independently develop and execute sophisticated verification plans, quickly understand existing UVM environments, and efficiently debug complex hardware issues with minimal direction. Strong candidates bring solid RTL knowledge, collaborate effectively with design engineers, consistently drive verification closure through comprehensive coverage metrics, and take ownership of automation, regression quality, and continuous improvements to the verification environment. Experience validating complex hardware systems is highly valued, while prior networking experience is beneficial but not required.
