What does a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer do?

A Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing digital hardware components and systems, such as circuit boards and embedded devices, from a remote location. They use specialized software to create schematics and layouts, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure that hardware designs meet required specifications and standards. Their work often includes simulation, prototyping, and troubleshooting to optimize performance and reliability. Working remotely, they rely heavily on digital communication tools to coordinate with other engineers and stakeholders throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer, you need a solid background in digital circuit design, experience with hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, and a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with CAD tools such as Altium Designer, FPGA development boards, and simulation software is typically required, along with relevant certifications like Xilinx or Altera. Strong problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for collaborating remotely and managing complex projects independently. These skills and qualities are critical to delivering reliable, innovative hardware solutions efficiently while working in distributed teams.

How does a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development process?

As a Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teams such as firmware, software, and testing is usually achieved through virtual meetings, shared design tools, and project management platforms. Regular design reviews, documentation updates, and version control systems help ensure everyone stays aligned despite working from different locations. Strong communication skills and proactive outreach are essential, as you'll often need to clarify requirements, address technical challenges, and integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders. This remote structure allows for flexibility but requires discipline in managing tasks and maintaining clear, consistent communication.

What is the difference between Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineer vs Remote Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Digital Hardware Design EngineerRemote Embedded Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; certifications in FPGA or ASIC designBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related; certifications in embedded systems or RTOS
Work EnvironmentDesigning digital circuits, FPGA/ASIC development, hardware testingDeveloping embedded software, hardware integration, firmware testing
Industry UsageSemiconductors, consumer electronics, telecommunicationsAutomotive, IoT devices, industrial automation

The main difference is that Remote Digital Hardware Design Engineers focus on creating and testing digital hardware components like FPGA and ASICs, while Remote Embedded Systems Engineers develop software and firmware for embedded hardware systems. Both roles require technical expertise but differ in their primary focus on hardware design versus embedded software development.

Job description

The era of pervasive AI has arrived. In this era, organizations will use generative AI to unlock hidden value in their data, accelerate processes, reduce costs, drive efficiency and innovation to fundamentally transform their businesses and operations at scale.
SambaNova Suiteâ„¢ is the first full-stack, generative AI platform, from chip to model, optimized for enterprise and government organizations. Powered by the intelligent SN40L chip, the SambaNova Suite is a fully integrated platform, delivered on-premises or in the cloud, combined with state-of-the-art open-source models that can be easily and securely fine-tuned using customer data for greater accuracy. Once adapted with customer data, customers retain model ownership in perpetuity, so they can turn generative AI into one of their most valuable assets.
Sambanova Hardware Design Engineers are responsible for designing component units of the Reconfigurable Dataflow Unit ASICs deployed in our AI workload acceleration systems. They work alongside architects, design verification engineers, and physical design engineers to implement innovative features in hardware which provide unique value to Sambanova.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Define and document microarchitecture specifications for complex digital design elements for compute, memory, or networking subsystems
  • Code, integrate, and debug SystemVerilog RTL designs through the chip implementation and production lifecycle
  • Meet targets for Power, Performance and Area (PPA) using advanced digital design techniques for high-speed design
  • Work alongside design verification and physical design team owners to converge
  • Work with architects and software teams to prototype new features which improve application-level performance
  • Mentor junior design engineers on high-speed digital design techniques
  • Drive improvements into the design flow using AI and automation, including new EDA tool methodologies

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum required education: Master's or PhD degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Computer architecture and digital logic design
  • Knowledge of AI workload acceleration techniques and industry standard interconnects and protocols (e.g. AXI, PCIe, Ethernet, HBM/DDR)
  • Mastery of SystemVerilog design techniques for high speed, high performance ASICs
  • Demonstrated skill in converging functionality while making design decisions trading off Power, Performance, and Area (PPA)
  • Experience in digital logic synthesis tools and Static Timing Analysis (STA)
  • Proficiency in using industry standard tools for linting, Clock Domain Crossing (CDC), and Logical Equivalence Checking (LEC)
  • Proficiency in using tools and simulators for hardware performance analysis and tuning
  • Experience implementing SystemVerilog Assertions (SVA) for checking design intent
  • Familiarity with Git version control tool for managing release cycles
  • Scripting skills in Python and Linux Shell
