What is remote development?

Remote development refers to the practice of software development where developers work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. This setup is enabled by various collaboration tools, cloud services, and version control systems that allow teams to communicate and manage code remotely. Remote development offers flexibility, can improve work-life balance, and allows companies to tap into a global talent pool. However, it also requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to ensure productivity and team cohesion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with relevant coding languages, often supported by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, collaborative platforms such as GitHub or Jira, and remote communication tools like Slack or Zoom is essential. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication help remote developers stand out. These skills ensure productivity, effective teamwork, and reliable project delivery in a distributed work environment.

How do remote development teams typically collaborate and stay aligned on projects?

Remote development teams usually rely on a combination of project management tools, version control systems, and regular virtual meetings to stay connected and aligned. Communication platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams, along with daily stand-ups and sprint planning sessions, help ensure everyone is updated on progress and blockers. Code repositories such as GitHub or GitLab facilitate collaborative coding, while documentation tools keep information accessible. Effective remote collaboration often requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to manage tasks independently while staying engaged with the team.

Job description

At ProService, benefits administration isnโ€™t a back-office function โ€” itโ€™s one of the most consequential services we deliver to Hawaii employers. When employees get enrolled correctly, understand their plans, and receive clear answers during qualifying life events, employers trust us more. The Benefit Services Consultant is the person who makes that happen.

This is a client-facing, consultative role. Youโ€™ll own a book of business, serve as the primary benefits contact for your clients and their employees, and manage everything from eligibility changes to annual open enrollment โ€” across a high-volume environment where the details matter and the stakes are real.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

  • Serve as the primary benefits contact for assigned clients and their employees โ€” delivering proactive, consultative support on plan strategy, compliance, employee communications, and benefits education.
  • Guide clients and employees through eligibility changes and qualifying life events, explaining impacts, required documentation, and processing timelines clearly and accurately.
  • Facilitate and support annual open enrollment, including document audits, plan recommendations, employee education sessions, and enrollment processing.
  • Conduct eligibility audits across HRIS platforms, identify discrepancies, and ensure accuracy of enrollment records.
  • Proactively identify benefits gaps or opportunities within a clientโ€™s program and recommend plan adjustments aligned with workforce needs and budget.

IS THIS ROLE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This is a high-volume, client-service role where technical accuracy and clear communication are both non-negotiable. Youโ€™ll manage a real book of business โ€” which means clients are counting on you to be responsive, knowledgeable, and on top of moving parts across multiple accounts simultaneously. Open enrollment season is demanding, and mid-year regulatory changes donโ€™t wait for a convenient moment.

This isnโ€™t a back-office role where you process requests and move on. Clients will ask hard questions, and theyโ€™ll expect answers โ€” not escalations. Speed and accuracy have to coexist here. We expect you to build trust with clients quickly and hold a high standard for follow-through.

WHAT YOUโ€™LL BRING TO THE TEAM

Prior experience in benefits administration, consulting, or a client-service-focused HR or PEO environment is required. Strong working knowledge of healthcare benefit plans and applicable regulations (ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA) is expected coming in.

Youโ€™re probably a fit if:

  • You can translate complex benefits information into plain language without losing accuracy. A client asks why their employeeโ€™s dependent wasnโ€™t enrolled after a qualifying life event โ€” you walk them through documentation requirements and next steps without needing to look it up.
  • You manage competing priorities without letting things fall through the cracks. During open enrollment, you track deadlines across multiple clients while still responding to mid-cycle eligibility questions within the same day.
  • You hold yourself to a high error standard โ€” not because someoneโ€™s watching, but because the work requires it. Youโ€™ve caught your own mistake before it reached the client and corrected it without being asked.
  • Youโ€™re comfortable with technology and adapt quickly when systems change. Youโ€™ve navigated more than one HRIS platform and figured out a new one without a formal training program.
  • You communicate proactively โ€” clients hear from you before they have to chase you down. You send status updates on open items without being asked, especially when timelines shift.

WORK LOCATION

Hawaii Statewide & US Mainland โ€” Hybrid or Remote

We welcome applications from candidates based anywhere in Hawaii, including neighbor islands, who would work a hybrid schedule (in-office Tuesdayโ€“Thursday, with remote flexibility on Monday & Friday). We also welcome fully remote candidates based on the US Mainland within the following states: California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. Remote candidates must be available during Hawaii Standard Time (HST / UTC-10) business hours.

In office (Hawaii): Tuesday โ€“ Thursday | Remote: Monday & Friday | Remote (Mainland): HST business hours required

COMPENSATION

The base compensation for this position is $20.00 โ€“ $25.50 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

At ProService, compensation is tied to performance. Strong results are recognized and rewarded, and there are clear paths to advance within the Benefits Consultant track and into senior advisory, team lead, and management roles across the benefits organization.

Benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Fully paid healthcare
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Paid parental leave
  • Student loan assistance
  • Professional development reimbursement
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Paid time off

WHY YOUโ€™LL LOVE PROSERVICE

  • A PROhana unlike any other. We assume the best in each other, give feedback focused on whatโ€™s rightโ€”not whoโ€™s rightโ€”and show up every day. This isnโ€™t just a workplace. Itโ€™s a community.
  • Do work that matters. Youโ€™ll see exactly how your contributions move the needleโ€”meaningful problems, real decisions, and a seat at the table.
  • Grow without a ceiling. Internal roles post first, and we reimburse certifications, conferences, and memberships. Your growth is our growth.
  • Compete, collaborate, and win together. High expectations, real accountability, and a team of experts ready to help you push through any obstacle.
  • Total rewards built around your whole life. Fully paid healthcare, 401(k) matching, paid parental leave, student loan assistance, employee assistance programs, and paid time offโ€”just to name a few.
