What is a remote developer?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What does a remote developer do?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

As a FullStack Developer, you'll build scalable applications and backend systems that support personalized digital learning experiences.
You'll work across backend architecture, APIs, databases, mobile applications, cloud infrastructure, and AI-powered technologies.
The role combines hands-on development with technical design, deployment, performance optimization, and long-term system reliability.
You'll contribute to products used across language education, from K-12 and higher education to corporate learning environments.
Working with modern technologies such as Node.js, TypeScript, React Native, NestJS, PostgreSQL, AWS, and AI platforms, you'll help turn product requirements into robust solutions.
You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams while also having the autonomy to solve complex technical challenges and drive implementation.
This is an opportunity to make a direct impact on innovative education technology within a fully remote, international environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable full-stack applications and backend systems.
  • Architect technical solutions that are secure, reliable, maintainable, and capable of supporting evolving product requirements.
  • Develop clean, efficient, and well-structured code across backend, web, and mobile applications.
  • Build and maintain REST APIs and server-side applications using Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS, and related technologies.
  • Develop and maintain mobile experiences using React Native and Expo, including application builds and production deployments.
  • Manage and optimize PostgreSQL databases and work with Prisma ORM, Redis, and other data technologies.
  • Design and support cloud-based solutions using AWS services such as Lambda, Elastic Beanstalk, RDS, S3, CloudFront, and Amplify.
  • Implement and maintain microservices, distributed systems, containerized applications, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Manage application deployments to both the Apple App Store and Google Play, ensuring reliable release processes.
  • Work with AI platforms and integrate AI-driven capabilities into applications and products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout the software development lifecycle, from technical design through deployment and maintenance.
  • Apply Agile, DevOps, testing, version control, and CI/CD best practices to improve development quality and delivery efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and continuously improve application performance, security, and reliability.
Requirements:
  • Approximately 5+ years of professional full-stack development experience is preferred.
  • Strong foundation in computer science, including data structures, algorithms, software architecture, and system design.
  • Strong backend development experience with Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and server-side programming.
  • Hands-on experience with React Native, Expo/EAS, HTML, CSS, and modern frontend development practices.
  • Experience with Prisma ORM, Redis, Git, and Bitbucket.
  • Strong experience with AI platforms and AI-enabled application development; AI experience is mandatory for this role.
  • Proven expertise deploying applications to both the Apple App Store and Google Play; mobile store deployment experience is mandatory.
  • Practical experience with Docker and Linux environments.
  • Experience across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and development through testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines such as Bitbucket Pipelines.
  • AWS experience is highly desirable, particularly with Lambda, Elastic Beanstalk, RDS, S3, CloudFront, and Amplify.
  • Experience with microservices and distributed systems is an advantage.
  • Python and Django experience is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to troubleshoot complex systems effectively.
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional and distributed teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred; advanced degrees or relevant certifications are a plus.
  • Willingness to work primarily according to an EST time-zone schedule.
  • Candidates must be based in Europe.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation of approximately $4,000-$4,500 per month.
  • Fully remote working arrangement for candidates based in Europe.
  • Opportunity to work on innovative technology supporting personalized language education.
  • Exposure to a broad modern technology stack spanning Node.js, TypeScript, React Native, AWS, AI platforms, microservices, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Opportunity to contribute to products serving K-12, higher education, and corporate learning environments.
  • High degree of technical ownership across architecture, development, deployment, and optimization.
  • Opportunity to work on impactful products combining education and emerging technologies.
  • International and distributed working environment with flexibility associated with remote work.
