Remote Developers and Remote Software Engineers share similar skills and credentials, often working remotely in tech environments. The main difference lies in their roles: Remote Developers typically focus on coding and building applications, while Remote Software Engineers may have broader responsibilities including system design and architecture. Both roles are in high demand and frequently searched for by employers and job seekers alike.

What Is the Job of a Remote Developer?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are remote developers?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

Job description

About the Role

At NinjaOne, we are passionate about building unified IT solutions that simplify how IT organizations operate at scale. We are looking for a Senior DevOps Manager to lead our Build & Release Engineering and Developer Platform initiatives, with a strong focus on CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and scalable build systems.

In this role, you will lead a high-impact team responsible for designing and evolving a self-service, highly automated developer platform that enables fast, secure, and reliable software delivery. You will play a critical role in improving developer velocity, release quality, and operational efficiency.

You will partner closely with Engineering, Security, and Product teams to define and execute on the vision and OKRs that modernize our build infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and cloud provisioning frameworks.

Location - We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states - CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

We hire the best software engineers, but experience in our stack can’t hurt: NinjaOne is built on Java, Kotlin, C++, Golang and Postgres; supporting millions of user endpoints and running as a scalable cloud service in AWS.  Knowing large-scale datastore bottlenecks, asynchronous application design and client-server architecture will help you.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Define and execute on the vision and OKRs for CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and release automation frameworks
  • Architect and scale cloud-native build platforms and standardized end-to-end CI/CD workflows (pre-merge → deploy → rollback)
  • Lead adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) (CDK, Terraform, Ansible) and build self-service infrastructure platforms
  • Establish golden paths, reusable pipeline templates, and policy-as-code to ensure consistency, security, and compliance
  • Implement progressive delivery strategies (blue/green, canary, feature flags) with automated rollback and release orchestration
  • Improve delivery performance using DORA metrics (deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate)
  • Enhance developer experience by reducing build times, eliminating flaky pipelines, and enabling ephemeral environments
  • Build and scale a high-performing DevOps / Build Engineering team, driving a culture of automation and continuous improvement
  • Partner with Engineering, Product, and Security to align on roadmaps, DevSecOps practices, and platform strategy
  • Establish observability and operational insights across pipelines (metrics, logs, tracing) to identify bottlenecks and optimize performance
  • Other duties as needed

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 7+ years of engineering management experience and 10+ years in DevOps, software, or infrastructure engineering
  • Strong expertise in CI/CD platforms (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, CircleCI) and build systems/artifact management (Bazel, Gradle, Maven, npm)
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, Terraform, Ansible) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and progressive delivery strategies
  • Proficient in programming/scripting (Python, Go, Java, or Typescript preferred)
  • Strong foundation in DevOps and platform engineering practices, with a focus on automation and self-service platforms
  • Data-driven mindset with experience using metrics (e.g., DORA) to drive continuous improvement
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor teams, influence stakeholders, and communicate effectively
  • Ability to balance execution and long-term platform strategy
