What is a remote COTA telehealth?

A Remote COTA Telehealth position involves a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) providing therapy services to patients virtually, rather than in person. In this role, the COTA assists licensed occupational therapists in developing and implementing treatment plans using secure video conferencing and other digital tools. This allows patients to receive care from home, improving access and convenience, especially for those in rural or underserved areas. The COTA collaborates with the supervising occupational therapist to ensure quality care and compliance with legal and ethical standards.

What are some unique challenges faced by a remote COTA in telehealth settings?

Remote COTAs in telehealth often face challenges such as building rapport with clients virtually, adapting therapeutic activities for the home environment, and managing technology-related issues. Unlike in-person sessions, you may need to rely on creative problem-solving to engage clients and ensure they have the necessary resources at home for therapy. Communication with supervising OTs and other team members is typically conducted through digital platforms, requiring strong organizational and documentation skills. Despite these hurdles, telehealth provides opportunities for greater schedule flexibility and access to a wider range of clients.
