The Center for Applied Linguistics is a nonprofit organization promoting access, equity and mutual understanding for linguistically and culturally diverse people around the world.
The mission of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is to promote language learning and cultural understanding by serving as a trusted source for research, resources, and policy analysis. Through its work, CAL seeks solutions to issues involving language and culture as they relate to access and equity in education and society around the globe.
CAL is located in Washington, D.C. For this position, the employee may choose to work in their preferred combination of in person at the D.C. office in a hoteling capacity, or remotely (up to 100% remote). CAL does not compensate or reimburse candidates for relocation expenses. This position is not open to candidates residing in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, California, or the U.S. Territories.
Job Description
CAL is seeking a Research Fellow for a one-year appointment. This position provides research and development support for project-specific tasks and activities, including reviewing academic literature, producing professional learning resources, analyzing qualitative data, and drafting reports across CAL's work in dual language and bilingual education, and to support a formative assessment project in science education.
This position may require some travel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Lead literature review efforts by identifying key resources and producing annotated bibliographies and clear reviews of literature suitable for publication.
• Conduct qualitative research analysis, draft written reports of findings, and contribute to final reports and presentations.
• Create surveys, analyze data, and report on results.
• Support the creation of research-informed professional learning materials in CAL's learning management system.
• Support stakeholder meetings including producing agendas and managing notes.
• Create accessible materials for dissemination including slides, reports, and other materials as needed.
• Communicate with partners and external colleagues.
• Assist with other duties as needed.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Master's degree from an accredited college or university, in a related field, and 4 or more years of relevant experience, or a PhD from an accredited college or university, in a related field.
• Experience with drafting scholarly reports for publication
• Experience with elementary science education
• Experience or formal coursework in dual language or bilingual education, assessment, research methods, qualitative analysis or a combination of the above
• Experience working within a learning management system (LMS)
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Excellent interpersonal, editing, oral and written communication skills in English.
• Proficiency in a language other than English (preferably Spanish).
• Proficiency in the use of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Proficiency in developing materials in a Learning Management System (LMS)
• Ability to review and synthesize professional literature.
• Ability to execute qualitative analysis.
• Ability to work flexibly and cooperatively in a fast-paced team environment.
• Acute attention to detail and ability to consistently meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
