The Research Mentor will work directly with high school students to guide them through research projects, fostering a deeper understanding of the research process. This role is essential for encouraging students' academic growth and sparking a long-term interest in research and scholarly inquiry. The mentor will support students in developing research skills, honing critical thinking, and producing quality research outputs.
Responsibilities
- Research Guidance: Mentor students in selecting topics, formulating research questions, designing studies, and developing a coherent research methodology.
- Skill Development: Teach students core research skills, such as literature review, data collection, analysis, and academic writing.
- Project Management: Help students create and follow timelines to ensure timely progress and project completion.
- Feedback and Review: Provide constructive feedback on students' research drafts and presentations, helping them refine their ideas and improve the clarity of their work.
- Documentation Support: Guide students in properly citing sources and compiling bibliographies, abstracts, and presentations for final reports.
- Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular meetings with students to monitor progress, troubleshoot challenges, and celebrate milestones.
- Event Preparation: Prepare students for any research presentations, conferences, or symposiums as part of the program.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program or hold a graduate degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in a relevant field.
- Research Experience: Demonstrated experience with academic or professional research projects.
- Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex concepts for high school students.
- Mentorship Abilities: Patient, enthusiastic, and adept at working with adolescents; prior mentorship or teaching experience is a plus.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects and keep track of students' progress.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in mentoring or teaching students, especially high school or undergraduate levels.
- Background in STEM, social sciences, or humanities research.
- Familiarity with educational technology or remote communication tools (Zoom, Google Classroom, etc.)
