Job Title: Building Automation Software EngineerJob Description

The Building Automation Software Engineer programs and configures Building Automation Systems, focusing on control logic, networking, device integration, graphics development, and system databases using industry-standard automation platforms and protocols. This role supports the full project lifecycle by testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and documenting automation systems to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe operation. The engineer collaborates closely with project teams, customers, and field personnel to manage priorities, resolve technical issues, and deliver projects on schedule, applying deep expertise in HVAC and building systems, controls engineering, and networked automation technologies to optimize facility operations while maintaining high safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities
  • Program and configure Building Automation Systems, including control logic, networking, device integration, graphics development, and system databases.
  • Develop and implement automation solutions using industry-standard building automation platforms and communication protocols.
  • Test automation systems thoroughly to verify functionality, performance, and reliability prior to commissioning.
  • Commission building automation systems on-site or remotely to ensure proper operation and integration with facility equipment.
  • Troubleshoot system issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to maintain stable and efficient operation.
  • Create clear and detailed documentation for automation systems, including configurations, network diagrams, control strategies, and user guides.
  • Collaborate with project teams, customers, and field personnel to communicate project status, manage priorities, and align on technical requirements.
  • Manage technical aspects of projects to support on-time delivery, coordinating with stakeholders to resolve design and implementation challenges.
  • Apply expertise in HVAC and building systems to design and refine control strategies that improve comfort, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Utilize controls engineering principles and networked automation technologies to optimize facility operations while adhering to safety, quality, and process standards.
  • Integrate devices and subsystems using protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, LON, and N2 to create cohesive and interoperable automation solutions.
  • Support ongoing system maintenance and enhancements by updating configurations, graphics, and databases as building requirements evolve.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience programming Building Automation Systems.
  • Minimum of 4+ years of hands-on experience with BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, LON, N2, or similar building automation protocols.
  • Strong proficiency in configuring control logic, networking, device integration, graphics development, and system databases for building automation platforms.
  • Practical exposure to HVAC automation and HVAC systems, including how building automation interacts with mechanical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of IP networks and networked automation technologies used in building systems.
  • Ability to test, commission, and troubleshoot building automation systems to ensure reliable and efficient operation.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with project teams, customers, and field personnel.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills for diagnosing complex technical issues and implementing solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical priorities and support project delivery within defined schedules and standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with a variety of building automation platforms and tools.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices for building automation and controls engineering.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation, including system configurations, diagrams, and control narratives.
  • Comfort working in a hybrid environment and collaborating with remote team members.

Work Environment

This role operates in a hybrid work environment where most of the team works remotely, supported by modern collaboration tools and digital workflows. The position requires being within driving distance of an office to support occasional on-site work, such as commissioning, troubleshooting, or project meetings. Work may involve time at customer facilities to interact with building systems, HVAC equipment, and networked automation infrastructure, as well as time in an office or home office setting for programming, documentation, and remote support. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Madison, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.50 - $60.00/hr.
