What is remote art?

A Remote Art job refers to any position in the art field—such as digital artist, illustrator, graphic designer, or concept artist—that can be performed from a location outside of a traditional office, usually from home or any place with internet access. These jobs often involve creating visual content for clients, companies, or personal projects using digital tools and communication platforms. Remote Art jobs offer flexibility and the opportunity to work with clients globally, but they also require strong self-motivation, time management, and digital communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote artist?

To excel as a Remote Artist, you need strong artistic ability, proficiency in design principles, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work, often supported by a degree or training in fine arts or graphic design. Familiarity with digital art software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Procreate, or other industry-standard tools is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams from a distance. These skills and qualities ensure high-quality creative output, effective remote collaboration, and the ability to meet project deadlines in a virtual work environment.

How does remote collaboration typically work for art teams, and what tools are commonly used to stay connected and productive?

Remote art teams often rely on a combination of communication and project management tools to ensure seamless collaboration. Platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom are widely used for real-time discussions and meetings, while tools such as Trello, Asana, or Jira help manage project timelines and deliverables. For sharing and reviewing artwork, cloud-based services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or specialized platforms like Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud are commonly utilized. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions are important to maintain creative alignment and team cohesion. Adapting to asynchronous communication and being proactive in sharing updates are key to thriving in a remote art environment.

While both roles are creative and often remote, they serve different industry needs and require distinct skill sets.

Job description

Sr. Art Director

Position: Full-Time

Location: This position offers remote work from (Los Angeles/Denver).

OVERVIEW

Movement Strategy is looking for a Senior Art Director with strong copy chops to bring social-first, compelling creative to life for a high-profile lifestyle and retail account. Reporting to a Creative Director, you'll help shape and lead the visual direction of the work, developing elevated, platform-native creative that brings home, design, and product storytelling to life across social channels.

This role sits at the intersection of retail, lifestyle, and culture, with opportunities to create across seasonal moments, tentpole campaigns, and ongoing content streams. As a Senior AD, you'll own creative executions end-to-end, contribute meaningfully to concept development, and help raise the bar on craft, consistency, and creative quality across the account.

You are a strong visual thinker with social agency experience and a portfolio that shows excellent craft, taste, and attention to detail. You're comfortable concepting alongside creative partners, translating ideas into standout design and content, jumping in to support copy, and iterating quickly in a fast-moving environment. You understand how to create for social platforms, how to stay tapped into cultural trends, and how to bring energy, style, and intention to every piece of work.

A BIT ABOUT US

Movement Strategy creates content and campaigns for the world's most exciting brands. We win awards, make headlines, shatter engagement numbers and celebrate the journey along the way. It's why companies like Netflix, Amazon, Spotify, and Intuit come to us again and again.

We're fully remote with hubs in New York, Denver, and LA, and a presence all across the US. We believe collaboration is what takes our work from good to great, and at times, even to legendary status. We champion diverse opinions and creativity in every department, and provide professional development and learning opportunities with the goal of helping you discover your best work today, and learn how to make it even better in the future.

KEY FOCUS AREAS

Creative Collaboration & Concepting
  • Lead and contribute to concept development for creative briefs and social-first executions
  • Partner closely with Creative Directors to shape visual approaches and challenge creative thinking
  • Translate high-level concepts into clear, compelling visual systems and executions
  • Provide feedback and creative guidance to designers and junior art directors
  • Contribute to concept development through both visual thinking and copy support, including headlines, social hooks, and short-form messaging in partnership with copywriters
Social-First Design & Execution
  • Design and oversee a wide range of high-volume, fast-paced social deliverables across Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, and emerging platforms
  • Create visual explorations, mocks, and polished assets that bring ideas to life with a premium, design-forward lens
  • Collaborate with copy and motion partners to ensure cohesive, high-quality creative across executions
  • Maintain strong attention to performance, scalability, and platform-native best practices
  • Write or refine short-form copy as needed for social executions (headlines, captions, on-screen text), ensuring visual and verbal storytelling are tightly aligned
Craft & Creative Quality
  • Set and uphold a high bar for visual craft, consistency, and attention to detail across all deliverables
  • Stay tapped into design, lifestyle, and social trends to inform creative direction
  • Support process improvements and workflow efficiencies in collaboration with Creative Directors and ACDs
  • Ensure work aligns with Amazon brand standards while still feeling fresh and culturally relevant

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5–8+ years of experience in an agency or creative environment developing social-first campaigns and content
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator; Premiere or After Effects preferred)
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong conceptual thinking, elevated design craft, and social-first execution
  • Comfortable contributing light copywriting for social-first creative, including short-form messaging, headlines, and captions
  • Experience working on retail, lifestyle, or product-driven brands is a strong plus
  • Proven ability to lead projects, manage multiple workstreams, and collaborate cross-functionally
  • Confident presenter with strong storytelling skills
  • Excellent time management and comfort working in a fully remote environment

IDEAL QUALITIES

  • High energy, passionate, curious, confident, and tenacious in learning, coupled with the ability to navigate the nuances of different client teams.
  • Must communicate quickly and accurately, think quickly or improvise, and present confidently.
  • Should be a nimble self-starter and quickly adjust to internal and external teams in an ever-changing environment; identify opportunity with bias to action.
  • You're proactive and naturally curious about the digital and social space, constantly looking for opportunities to evolve the department and advance the work.
  • You are passionate about the work you do and treat your client's business as if it were your own.
  • Have a track record of success in building strong relationships, leading teams, influencing others, and navigating client culture.
  • You have a diverse and inclusive perspective, valuing different viewpoints and backgrounds within the team.
  • You make others' jobs easier (no matter who they are or what they do)
  • You create a positive and open environment.
  • Your attention to detail is unmatched, ensuring that paid outputs meet the highest quality standards and align with client objectives.
  • You know how to work smarter, not harder.

Don't meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they check every single box. Movement Strategy is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and strongly encourages those from historically and systemically marginalized communities to apply.

We believe that what we put out into the world matters. And since we were founded on the principles of paving our own path, we take bold steps toward what we believe is the right direction. This means addressing the big stuff: the systems of inequality that impact some of us far more than others. As culture creators, we firmly believe we have a responsibility to our colleagues, clients, communities, and the industry to live up to the Movement's name. We confront inequities head-on as they come, knowing that this work is never done and that we must keep the momentum.
