What is a relocation?

A relocation job involves assisting individuals or employees with moving to a new location for work-related reasons. This can include coordinating transportation, housing, and other logistical needs to ensure a smooth transition. Relocation professionals may work for corporations, relocation companies, or real estate firms, helping clients navigate the financial, legal, and personal aspects of moving.

What are some of the common challenges faced by relocation specialists, and how are they addressed?

Relocation Specialists often handle complex situations such as tight move timelines, navigating international regulations, and assisting employees with unique family or housing needs. They regularly coordinate with external vendors, HR teams, and assignees to ensure all logistical and compliance requirements are met. Proactive planning, clear communication, and flexibility are key strategies for overcoming challenges and reducing potential stress for relocating employees. Support resources, ongoing training, and access to relocation management systems also help specialists deliver efficient and positive results. By anticipating obstacles and maintaining a solutions-oriented approach, Relocation Specialists foster smooth transitions for all parties involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the relocation position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Relocation Specialist role, you typically need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and experience in logistics or human resources, often supported by a relevant degree or background. Familiarity with relocation management software, corporate policies, and visa or immigration regulations is highly valuable. Outstanding interpersonal skills, problem-solving capabilities, and cultural sensitivity help create a smooth transition for relocating employees. These competencies ensure efficient, compliant, and supportive relocations, which are essential for employee satisfaction and organizational success.

Job description

Senior Associate/Principal – Mechanical Engineering

Location: Edmonton, AB
Discipline: Mechanical Engineering / Building Consulting
Projects: Commercial, Healthcare, Institutional & Mixed-Use
Level: Associate / Principal

Ready for the Next Chapter of Your Career?

You've spent years building your technical expertise, leading projects, mentoring engineers, and becoming a trusted advisor to clients.

Now, you may be ready for something more.

We are working with a growing consulting engineering firm in Edmonton looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer who is ready to take the next step into a Senior Associate-level role.

This is an opportunity to move beyond simply managing projects and take on a larger role in leadership, client development, business development, mentorship, and the growth of the mechanical engineering practice.

And if you're currently based outside Edmonton, relocation is absolutely on the table.

Why Edmonton?

For an experienced engineer looking for greater responsibility, Edmonton offers an opportunity to build something meaningful within a growing engineering market — without necessarily having to compete for the same senior leadership opportunities available in larger, more saturated markets.

Whether you're currently in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, or elsewhere in Canada, this could be an opportunity to make a strategic career move while taking on a position with significantly more influence.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead the mechanical design and delivery of complex commercial, healthcare, institutional, and mixed-use projects
  • Provide senior technical leadership across the mechanical discipline
  • Mentor and develop engineers, designers, and EITs
  • Build and maintain relationships with owners, developers, architects, contractors, and other consultants
  • Participate in business development, proposals, presentations, and client pursuits
  • Identify opportunities to grow existing client relationships and develop new business
  • Help shape technical standards, processes, and best practices within the mechanical group
  • Support recruitment and development of the Edmonton mechanical team
  • Contribute to the strategic direction and continued growth of the practice
  • Work closely with senior leadership on long-term business development and market strategy

What We're Looking For

  • P.Eng. with approximately 10 - 15+ years of consulting engineering experience
  • Strong background in building mechanical engineering and HVAC design
  • Experience delivering commercial, healthcare, institutional, or large-scale mixed-use projects
  • Proven project leadership and technical management experience
  • Strong client-facing and communication skills
  • Experience mentoring and developing engineering teams
  • An interest in business development and growing client relationships
  • Someone who is ready to move toward Associate / Principal-level responsibility
  • Candidates currently outside Edmonton who are genuinely open to relocation are encouraged to apply

Why Consider This Opportunity?

More Than a Promotion
This isn't about giving you a bigger project list and changing your title. It's about giving you the opportunity to become a key leader within the mechanical practice.

It's More Than a Senior Engineering Position
This role is designed for someone who wants to have a voice in the business. You'll have the opportunity to influence how the Edmonton mechanical team grows, who joins the team, the clients the firm works with, and the types of projects it pursues.

A Genuine Path to Principal
For the right individual, this could/would be a Principal-level opportunity. This isn't a role where you'll simply be given another title after several years. The intention is to identify someone who can become a meaningful part of the firm's long-term leadership structure.

Autonomy + Support
You'll have significant autonomy while still having the backing of an established, multidisciplinary consulting engineering organization.

You won't be building a practice completely on your own—you'll have experienced leadership, established processes, multidisciplinary resources, and a strong reputation behind you.

Work With an Experienced Team

You'll be surrounded by experienced engineers and leaders who value collaboration, mentorship, and technical excellence.

The firm has also developed a strong reputation for employee tenure and long-term relationships, creating an environment where people can build careers rather than simply take another position.

A Diverse Portfolio

You'll have the opportunity to work across some of the most interesting building sectors in Alberta while continuing to develop your technical and leadership portfolio.

Relocation Support

Candidates relocating to Edmonton will be considered for relocation support, with the specific package discussed based on experience and circumstances.

If you're an experienced Mechanical Engineer who is open to making a move for the right career opportunity, we'd be happy to have a confidential conversation.
